Hi,
I've read many posts here about capturing DV material but I'm still not sure I'm doing it right. I want to capture my material and create a DVD without losing any quality. Harddisk space is not a problem (500 GB).
I capture my DV material (Sony Digital8) using the firewire port on my
Creative Labs Audigy 2 sound card and Premiere 6.5. Premiere uses
the Microsoft DV codec which creates an AVI file. I then edit my material
using premiere 6.5 and encode to MPEG2 (for output on a DVD) directly
from the timeline using the Canopus Procoder.
Is it ok to use the Microsoft DV Codec for capturing or should I use
another codec for better quality? Am I doing this right or should I do
something different?
Thanks for your support!
John

With DV via a Firewire port you aren't 'Capturing' video at all, merely transferring a file. The video on your D8 tape is a data stream and you are simply making an exact copy of that data stream onto your hard drive. Consequently, the DV codec that you use will have no bearing on the quality (despite what some people on these forums may try and tell you).

Ok, thanks. Why are there so many discussions on what codecs
everyone is using (for example huffuy as a lossless codec) ??

Because people capture stuff from TV, VHS, Laser Discs, Sat Receievers, etc.
This hobby isn't only for home movies from cameras....
