guide for VCD, but basically same as for SVCD:

If you want quality, don't use nero to encode. it does a lousy job. The 2 methods recommendes is use dvd2avi and then tmpgenc. The other method is to use dvd2svcd and either tmpgenc or cce. Both ways can be found at http://entiendo.gotnet.net . Then you will burn it with nero.

DVDx(free in Tools) but it will only output CBR MPEG-2,if you want VBR then rip and demux(Stream Processing) with DVDDecrypter and encode with TMPGEnc.

Here's what has worked for me with 100% success:
1. Rip with Super DVD Ripper. (www.dvdtodivx.com if I remember correctly). Free download. You may use it for 9 "rips" without paying. I paid after the third "rip" as it does the job very well.
2. Split with either Super DVD Ripper (automatically as it transcodes) or downoad AVI/MPEG Splitter and use it to split the mpeg2 created by Super DVD Ripper. I use the latter method as AVI/MPEG Splitter permits me to split at a user-specified point; I split between scenes. AVI/MPEG Splitter can be DL'd from www.boilsoft.com.
3. Burn SVCDs from the split movies using Nero. Probably other "burning" software will work on the PC, as well. I've also moved the split movies to my Mac and used VCD Builder and Toast to create the SVCDs.
The only "downside" to this method is that Super DVD Ripper will only do SVCD (mpeg2) in one "quality" (best). This yields about 40 minutes per CD. I've submitted a feature request with the author for a "slightly lower quality" setting which might permit 60 minutes per CD and still be better than VCD (which Super DVD Ripper also supports). -

I don't mean to be nasty or anything but,,, with DVD-RW drives prices dropping every day, and so many new computers coming equiped with these drives now a day, why would anyone be satisfied with VCD or even SVCD when one could simply do a DVD-+R back at perfect to near perfect quality? Specially with all the manipulations I see so many users go through just to get a VCD or SVCD. Of course many DVD backup utilities require multiple steps and some even just envolve as few as a couple of steps, so we can make it as simple or as envolved as we desire. The bottom line, at least in my view is final quality. That's where a real DVD backup wins hands down.
Now I know none of us do this but if people just want to copy a rental or borrowed DVD of a movie you were never planning on buying anyway, I supposed I would be satisfied with something less than a full back up. At one time I was converting all of my disks to divx to store in my pc but I've since stopped. I know have them all in DVD and I still end up buying about two movies a week. It's just an addiction! No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
I can tell you why I haven't bought a dvd writer yet. 1. They still are over $200.00 2. The standard is not set yet (however the newer dvd writers are coming out to do both). 3. The disks are still $3 bucks each compared to cdr which is around 20 cents. 4. Unlike music, you only play them so many times before you are sick of them(except kid movies, they watch them over and over) so why put so much money in them??? 4. with products like dvd2svcd, it really becomes a 'click and go' routine and all you do is come back many hours later and burn the disk and the svcd is done.
granted, dvd-r is much better quality, but for playing them once in a while I will go slightly lower quality and do svcd and save the $$$$... -
I wouldn't use DVDx, the quality is poor in comparison to DVD2SVC. Go with DVD2SVCD, it's easy to use and the final output is top notch.

Your right dvd media can be as cheap as .71, but you can get cdr's for less than .02 when you use rebates. As for dvd burners under 100 bucks, I would not purchase any of them ( you get what you pay for!!). Very few commercial movies can you do 1:1 burn, However, it is still easier to make a dvd than a svcd. As for dvd players playing both, here are the statistics: dvd-r 90% and dvd+r only 75% play them. So, not all dvd players will play them. Once the QUALITY dvd burners get to 100 bucks or less, I will plunge in the market unless they perfect the Mpeg4(divx) standalone players. With divx you can get the same quality without spending the money for a dvd burner. I make backup copies of my kids movies and they cannot tell the difference between the original and the svce. The only annoyance is that you have to change disks halfway thru the movie.

plus, just buy a cheapo $30 dvd player that plays both. plenty of them...just search for APEX. -
Hum,,, let's see,,, I can make a 1:1 backup of any movie that happens to fit into a DVD-5 disk on about 1:30 hours including burn time. A little longer is I have to compress ( transcode ) a bit. Resultinig quality EXCELLENT!!! Total Cost $1.00-$1.50 + no more than 2 hours
VCD / SVCD: RIP - ENCODE to Mpeg1 or 2 Maybe reauthor to throw in your own menus and such. Play around with Demux and Remux - Several programs later and hour of your time. Results: a VCD in either 2 -3 disks Quality nowhere as good as original. Cost = pennies per CD + Many hours ( Again I'd rather spend the dollar! )
Divx: Depending on the application/s you use, it could take hours. Remember the line in most guides??? ... now go to bed and let the movie encode and....
Results: bad - good to very good, depending on bit rate, whether you split to two disks or not. Single pass vs two Pass and a ton of other parameters. Cost pennies per CD = Again I rather spend the dollar.
I'll be watching my perfect backup before the envening is though and not a double to triple CD based inferior copy.
Not tryinig to be a smart ass here. Just point out that these days it is, the way prices seem to dorp, there is not longer any escuse to have to put up with less that DVD quality backups of our favorite movies. I used to be a Divx and VCD man just a year ago but I saw the light!!
Makes sense to me!No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Just use WinCopyDVD to rip and burn it with one click, and in one hour, get the stunning video and audio quality as same as DVD's.

these forums aren't for you to advertise your PAYWARE...there are lots of FREEWARE and SHAREWARE that does everything your proggie does for FREE
make your program FREE, and then we might look it at. -
Is there any other freeware or payware in the world could do DVD to SVCD in 1 hour? Please note, it's in 1 hour (1.7GHz CPU and 256MB RAM, if include burning time, it need one and half hour). If you use DVDx or any other Super DVD ripper (hey, it's payware too), you need more than 10 hours to do it. Maybe time is no value for you.
-
And you can download a TRIAL for test. The TRIAL is only limit for generate no more than 50MB SVCD file. You can see how fast it is.

btw, those all in one proggies (i.e. DVD2SVCD) are mostly FREE.
and plz don't get me started on all the errors on your site.... -
I had a quick look at the front page of your site and it says there that you can convert dvd-svcd in 30mins, in your last post you stated that it took an hour.....
You also said that it takes an extra 30mins to burn, what are you using a 2x burner, my 32x does a full cd in 3.5mins.
You also state that you would need more than 10hours to do this with any other program, my celeron 733 does it in about 10 hours so if your 1.7 needs more than 10 then i suggest you call a techie to check it out.
I grant you that time is valuable but most people spend atleast 15hours a day away from there computer working and sleeping alone, thats enough time to do 1.5 svcd's or 2.5-3 vcd's, its all about time management!
My 2cents worth
