TDK 2X DVD-RW Dangerous????

I just bought some of these dvd-rw's and there is a warning saying that it is for use only in 4x speed dvd-r/rw drives/recorders. They say something about if it is used in a drive w/ an old firmware it may lock up the drive, cause the lens to fog, and break the drive. My question is, is this dvd-rw safe to play in my Pioneer 16X DVD-ROM drive? What about regular set-top players. Is the danger only with RECORDING to the disk, or can it be playing it back as well? Does anyone know? Thanks for your help.

Recording only with the disk and old firmware locking the unit at 2x. Writing and reading are different processes of course.

There was a problem about a year ago when it was learned that SOME burner drives with SOME early firmware would not recognize SOME media correctly and the media would spin tooooo quickly and could damage the media and potentially the drive. If you have applied any firmware updates to your burners within the past 6 months you are probably ok.

Here is a link warning for the pioneer drives http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/device_e/owabi_e.html , they have had at least 3-4 firmware upgrades since then... The warning on your media is just one of those rare just in case someone hasn't applied the appropriate firmware
