  1. When I first bought the A05 and use Nero Express to burn VIDEO_TS folder to DVD-R, Nero Express only allow me to burn at 1X.

I was told I need to upgrade the A05 fimware which I did. Now Nero Express allow me to select 2X, 4X, MAX.

Yesterday, I bought 2X DVD-R media and DVDDecrypter allows me to burn .ISO at 2X but Nero Express, once it sees this blank media, this automatically burn it at 1X regardless of the speed I chose.

Is this the problem with A05 new firmware that restrict 1X on cheap media ???

I could not tell the brand of the media I bought. It did not say on the label (it's a 50 disc pack)

  4. Since when ? I don't use the express side, but in Nero proper, if there is no disc in the drive it will eject the tray and ask you to insert a blank when you click on the burn icon.

If the firmware is legitimate (ie not hacked, max speed on any disc), then it is quite possible that the media is not listed in the drive's look-up table of certified media and therefore gone to it's "safest" write strategy which will invariably involve a 1x burn. I recall on the 04 at least I found one brand of disc that used to burn at 2x and then, after an upgrade, went down to 1x. No doubt if they had problems on one version they would have changed it on all subsequent revisions.

If the media manufacturer is not obvious (ie it doesn't have any branding prominantly stamped on the disc or printed on the sleeve) and bought in bulk, we can probably assume it's a cheapo disc and the recorder doesn't like it's flavour that much. There are good, reliable cheapo discs out there, but I am not surprised by the 1x limit.

Look on the bright side, though - if they work without coasters, what's a bit longer burn time ? I'd rather go and make myself a coffee or chat up the young woman two doors down from me while the burn is in progress than waste discs...

  5. garryheather is right on the money. Even if the manufacturer claims the media as 2X capable, it is not guaranteed to burn at 2X unless it had paid money to list their disk with Pioneer.

To work around this problem... either use a non-official cracked firmware which lets you burn any media at 2X at your own risk or buy a well-known brand at higher price such as TDK, Pioneer, Samsung, etc.

  6. 1) I upgraded my A05 firmware to rev 1.21
    2) Nero Express comes with my A05 in the package, it behave the same as DVD Decryptor which burn only at 1X. Both let me specify 2X but the A05 only burn at 1X.
    3) I am pretty sure the A05 only burn at 1X for the DVD pack that I just bought.
Before upgrading FW to 1.21, Nero Express does not even let me choose the burning speed other than 1X.
So, I guess to get 2X or 4X I have to buy more expensive media !!!
