Considering the Sony DRX510UL EXTERNAL DVD burner. Any difference in operational capability of an external DVD burner and an internal DVD burner. I'll be using either firewire or USB 2.0.

No problem (apart from probably requiring another socket to plug the PSU into).
Internal or external, to coin a phrase it should do exactly what it says on the tin. -
f you're using extrnal version, use firewire rather than usb2 for burning to dvd-r. dvd+r will burn fine under usb2 but many people seem to have problems burning to dvd-r.
