This is my first post, I've been waiting so long for that 24 hours to expire so I can finally make my first post! Well I am in a situation here. I was given the job to edit a video that has a scheduled release date that is not very far away, and I have never edited anything in my life. I was given the Adobe Premiere 6.5 editing software to use, and I dont know how to use it. I got the hang of all the things I need to know except one thing, fade in/outs. Can somone please tell me in detail exactly what to do? I am so new to this. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks alot,
PPenguin.

Your first post...and my first time to give a tip. Yikes. Anyway. I've been using Premiere 5.1, so I'm not sure if 6.5 is exactly the same in this area, but here's how I do fades...
You need some "black" to fade in to or out of. The way I do this is go to Project>Create>Color Matte, then pick the color of black I want. I've found that I like the black I get from typing in 25 for each of the red, green, and blue. Then click "OK", then you can name it "black", or whatever.
Now, you can drag the black color matte onto your timeline.
Grab the edge and stretch out the black to whatever length you want.
Put your video on the timeline and add a "cross dissolve" to dissolve from black to video or from video to black.
There's your fade in or fade out.
Anyway, that's the way I figured out to do it in Premiere 5.1.
If the later versions are different, or if anyone does it another way, please post it. -
If you click the arrow (or triangle) next to "Video 1", that should let you see three rows -- Video 1A, Transition, and Video 1B. If you want to transition between two shots (or between the color matte you create and a shot), put one on Video 1A and the other on Video 1B, overlapping them by the amount you want for the transition. Then drag a dissolve (or whatever transition you want) into the "transition" row and drop it in place where the two are overlapped. It should automatically adjust to fit the overlap you made for it. From there, you can also push or pull the ends to make it longer or shorter, if you decide you need to. Also, if you right click on the transition, you can adjust some settings, if necessary.
ALSO...you can accomplish the same thing with Video 1 as one row. Just overlap the clips on that same row and drop a transition onto the overlapped part. I've just gotten used to doing it the other way. -
I use black video instead of a color matte (File > New > Black Video). You can change the duration to suit your needs for the particular fade. Then I use the Cross Dissolve transition. You can put your clip on Video 1A and the Black Video on Video 1B with the proper amount of overlap, then drag the transtion as described above. You may also want to fade the audio in or out, which can be done using the "rubber bands" on the audio track.

I was wondering about the "black video". When I used Discreet Edit at work, projects would automatically have black video in the bin. When I got Premiere 5.1 (which I'm still using) at home, I couldn't find black video and decided to use a black color matte. Under File>New, I only have Project, Library, Sequence, and Title. Am I missing something, or is "black video" something they added to later versions?

Black video was probably added in later versions. It's in v6.5, but don't remember if it was in v6.0.
Black colored matte should be fine. Black video is just a black colored BMP with 720x480 demensions.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
Black video was in 6.0, but I don't remember if it was under the File menu or not. The User Guide says to click the Create Item button at the bottom of the Project Window and choose Black Video from the Create Type menu. I started with 6.0, so I don't know if it was available in earlier releases.
