I have a few SVCV mpgs. The quality is not great, lots of artifacts in places, I'm guessing from low bitrates.

My standalone player doesn't play SVCD, so I will have to convert either to VCD or DVD for play on a 36" TV.

Any opinions on which way I should go? Fitting tons of stuff on a disk is not an issue -- should be able to reencode at a nice high bitrate, at least for DVD.

Available tools for reencoding are TMPGEnc, DVD Workshop, and Vegas 4.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  2. Re-encoding either way will lose quality. Why not keep them as they are put them staright to DVD. It's not standard but as long as you convert the audio to 48khz many DVD players will play them. Use a tool like SVCD2DVDMPG to help, or look in the Authoring section for guides on how to do it manually.

VCD is the worst option so preserving the original SVCD and authoring to DVD is the way to go. Here'a a list of SVCD-DVD guides.

    Hey bugster,

I know for sure my player won't play SVCDs burned on CD blanks. Are you saying that if I put the SVCD mpg (after demuxing, changing audio and remuxing I guess) on a DVD it might handle it? Or does the fact that I doesn't support SVCD on CD mean I'm SOL?

    Thanks

Report: Ifoedit did the trick. I did have to convert the audio to 48000, if I simply demuxed and left it at 44, my player gagged on the audio.

One curious thing was that I usually use Prassi to burn DVDs from AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. This time it wouldn't burn, aborted with an error message right at the beginning of the burn. I ended up burning in Nero, which worked OK. I wonder if Prassi is checking for stream legality or something?

And one last question. Anyone know of an authoring program I can use to do what I did with Ifoedit but that will let me have a menu with chapter points (doesn't have to be fancy). [Reminder to late joiners to thread - video stream is not DVD compliant]

    Thanks again
