It is because it is doublesided. that is, 4.7 GB on each side. Man, if they invented a disk that can hold 9.4 GB per side and can be written to by today's writers, they could virtually charge whatever they wanted.
    Hello.

  3. will this board have a sticky with 9.4gb DVD-R DON'T EXIST !!!

So imagine double side 9.4 (18.8gb) will never exist (they don't even use this in Real DVD)

  4. I guess I am confused… that are the guides that or 9->5 and 9->9… I understand 9 to 5 is ripping the disc them compressing it a little to get it too fit on a 4.5 disk… but I thought that 9 to 9 was copying it directly???? Or is it splitting it into (2) 4.5 disks?

Yes, I'd say you are, since there are no DVD9-to-DVD9 guides anywhere on this site. (At least none that I can find... if there is one, then whoever wrote the guide is rather confused too!)

It's splitting it into two halves, yes.

There is no such thing as writable DVD-9 media. Period. They do not exist.

  6. Thanks, that does clear something’s up… but one more question… DVD movies are on 9.4 GB double layered DVD’s right? We just can buy this type of media and the hardware wouldn’t write to it anyways… is that right???

burnable 9.4 dual layer media does not exist. commercial dvd-9 discs are pressed, not burned.

wrong - Stephen King's The Stand miniseries was a double-sided, dual layer disc. (the first one to be released commercially, in fact).

  9. More info as to why we won't see dual layer media any time soon:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=151608&highlight=burn+first+layer+glue

Even this far down the line, dual layer, dual sided pressed DVD media is still extremely difficult and costly to produce, so I don't think we will see too many of those any time soon either. Besides, the labels look nice on the top, don't you think ?

  10. I guess our only hope is that the HD DVD format will have dual layer burning capabilities when it is released down the line...I can just see the topics then...well 1 day into CCE encoding, only 36 more hours left...woot
