I'm converting a Xvid .avi w/ tmpgenc to xvcd to a resolution of 512x400, would there be a problem for this to play on my standalone dvd player. For my son's birthday today at noon. (central time)

That resolution is not standard and probably is not supported by very many DVD players. If you want to be more sure, then pick a standard resolution, either as a VCD or an SVCD if your player supports it. Have you looked up your player in the DVD players section? Every DVD player is different and without knowing the brand and model it's impossible for anyone to guess.
