  1. Ok, so I got my new computer, with a DVD writer, and I scoured different programs to see what worked the best. I used a lot of different programs, and I think it was with DVD Shrink that I ripped a movie, to my hard drive, and now I can't seem to delete it. I got an error message that says, "This appliction is being used by another person or program, please try closing the program that might be using the file and try again." However, I have tried restarting my computer, deleting the file from DOS, renaming, and moving, the 7.7 GB .ISO file, and it won't budge.

So, I'm using DVD X Copy XPress, which was finally easy enough to burn a movie. So, I figured I would rip another movie, and burn that. The movie that won't delete is "Jackass: The Movie", so I thought I'd try "Bad Boys"... so I copied it to my computer, and tried to write it to DVD, and it successfully wrote the DVD, however, when I tried watching the movie, it ended up being Jackass!

The strangest part, is that the G:\ drive, which is my DVD Rom drive, is permanently named "Jackass_4x3" no matter what movie is in the drive.

Also, I'm not sure what program could possibly be occupying the file that I can't delete.. here is a list of what I usually have open, could it be any of these? Any ideas:

So, I'm totally confused. Any ideas on how to delete the file? Why is the G Drive named jackass, permanently? Please help!!

if you are using Dtools to mount an iso make sure you dismount it before deleting the file else it will not work. sometimes you have to mount a new image for it to truely let go of the old one, but thats fairly rare.

I remember AVI files having this problem a while back. You may want to click here.

  4. flaystus, I don't use DTools... and I couldn't find it on the site, what does "dismounting" an image do?

Tommyknocker, the file I'm trying to delete is an ISO, not an AVI, does that make a difference? Also, I read the guide, adn it said to search for that registry file manually, do you have any idea what folder it would be in?

    Thanks a lot.

Click on start -> run. Type in regedit -> OK. Click on 'Edit' and choose 'Find' on dropdown. I would first do a search for 'Jackass.' Delete only the subfile where it occurs. Always backup the registry before making any changes.

how many programs you got running??????

you do have Daemon Tools running as shown in your task manager pic (daemon.exe), so do a search for Daemon on your PC and try to get into the options so you can dismount the image and remove the virtual drive

another tip is to click START, RUN then type msconfig and click the startup TAB and just have a look at the program names

you don't need them all to start on bootup so untick the ones you know you dont need running in the background and this will free a few system resources also. Why having a program hogging resources waiting for you to use it when you may not use it at all during that session on the PC!, its much better just to click the shortcut and let it load when you actually need it and not during bootup each and every time

Daemon tools sounds like the one....and could explain why you are burning the same movie (sometimes daemon tools will hijack your DVD rom drive letter).

To free up the ISO, right click on the daemon tools icon in your system tray (a blue "D" I think) and either set the number of drives to none or unmount the image...if you DVD drive letter has been hijacked then setting the number of drives to none should free it up again.

  8. Wow, MackemX, Bartman, Triple_Helix, you guys rule, that did the trick.

My drive is no longer hi-jacked, I was able to FINALLY delete the huge 8 gigabyte file, and the writer is working as it's supposed to.

    THANK YOU!

    No probs.

For anyone else reading this, Daemon tools shows a red lightning bolt if nothing is mounted and a blue one if an ISO is mounted (not a blue D as I said above....I was away from my PC at the time I wrote it and couldn't check so I was going from memory at least I got the colour right )

This is a great GUI interface for DAEMON. I had a lot of trouble unmounting .iso in Windows XP environment on a AMD machines. I started using daemonUI. It is completely drag and drop easy, great add on tool. I would not be without it now.

About 1/2 way down this page.
