Is there a program that converts mpeg/2 files to AVI and then vise versa?

Well, TMPGEnc does it great from AVI to MPEG, but vice versa you really need to tweak some settings.
Hello. -
I was looking at Quicktime and there I can export mpeg files as AVI. I tried to open a MPEG2 file but it said that some components were missing from the program so it couldn't play them. Is that something that I can download or what?
Thanks for the info Tommy, you've been great help. -
I am not that great using Quick Time, but I do believe you can download the codecs from the Internet.
Hello. -
When I download an avi movie from Kazaa and want to convert it to MPEG2 format to burn to a DVD.... 95% of the time, just changing the file extension to 'mpg' works fine! I then use ShowBiz burning software to burn it directly to disc and it plays OK on my home DVD player.... even when I burn it on a DVD-RW.

He wants to do it the other way as well... not tried it for a few years... but I will ask the wife if she fancies giving it a go!
I haven't tried it the other way as I have never needed to... I just burn the mpg files to DVD!
The files I change are avi to mpg.... not mpg2 (this isn't an actual extension... is it? I'm new to this video file stuff!). These are usually SVCD quality and very good most of the time depending on the file size. Media Player plays the avi and also plays the mpg version of the same file when altered.
These mpg files are then burnt to DVD... with no loss of quality.
I do it with all the avi files I download and it works perfect. I just tried this before anything else... saved a lot of time!Gerbil

erm??!?! what!?!??
you cant just change blahblah.avi to blah.blah.mpg
totall dif file formats!!
it has to be encoded/converted to mpg
if only it was that simple, and if it was then this forum etc wouldnt exist -
ANYWAYs, to go from MPEG2 to AVI you need a version of VDub that can load MPEG2, unless your source is MPEG1. Then, to save very little space, you need to crop out the black bars if you have any using VDub's crop filter. Next, you need to change the resolution to something that matches your source's aspect ratio. For example, if you have a 4:3 video, you would go 640x480. If you have a 16:9 video, you would go 640x360. If you have another aspect ratio, go use M$ Calc and figure out what you destination resolution needs to be.
