I pretty much mastered the technique of encoding vcd 2.0 from a dvd rip. I usually use 2pass vbr @ 1500kbps average. The settings appear to work great. I also use two 700MB cd-r’s to burn.
My vcd’s look great, just on the dark scenes, I’ve noticed on just about all vcd’s, the playback is a little too dark, but not unbearable. The regular lighted scenes look near dvd quality.
My friend recently gave me a divX movie that he ripped from a dvd. The movie is “15 minutes” I gotta tell you, the quality is AWESOME! Through out the whole movie, crisp clean playback. So I think I’m going to try to encode a few dvd rips to divX.
My question is, what is your opinions regarding vcd vs. divX movies?

vcd is easy to encode and plays on your dvd player. divx is not easy to encode well at all. You need to do lots and lots of research before you will even come close to getting all that divx can achieve. The biggest drawback of divx is lack of a standard. If you dont mind watching movies on your computer or using tv-out then the quality of divx beats vcds hands down. Also divx is not a good format for archiving. Future operating systems might not be able to play divx files anymore. It wouldnt suprise me at all if microsoft pulled something like that. But in terms of quality there is no question, a properly done divx will always look better than even the best vcd, and it can be much smaller as well.
You also shouldnt overlook the svcd format. Its quality is just as good as divx and can be even better in my opion. Plus it plays on svcd compatible dvd players and can easily be re-authored on dvd-r/w once that format becomes more feasible. -
Hi Adam,
Today I was learning the divx procedure and it didn’t appear hard to encode. Just use Smart Ripper, then FlaskMpeg to encode. However you’ll need the divx codec and the mp3 codec for sound. Other then that, learn how to use FlaskMpeg and that’s all there is to it.
I never encoded a svcd, which I am very curious to do. The only draw back to that is it has to use three cd’s for burning process. From what I understand, a svcd can only hold approx 40 minutes per cd?
But also like you mentioned, vcd “can” play on compatible dvd players beyond the computer. Divx can only play on the computer.
I was just curious to hear other’s opinions when comparing the two formats. I appreciate your comments, thanks.
Just to add, I am very pleased with my vcd 2.0 encodes. Just curious about the others.

You can fit just about as much time on a svcd as you want, it all depends on the bitrate you use. You can easily fit just about any movie onto 2 cdrs if you want, of course you will have to give up some quality. But still a 2 cd svcd will almost always look significantly better than a 2 cd vcd.
Yes you can encode using the divx codec as simply as using flask with the appropriate codec selected but like I said, this is not even coming close to the full potential of divx. Divx can utilize multipass encoding which allows for incredible increases in quality in the same amount of filesize. Check out http://www.doom9.net under the divx guides and you'll see just how complicated it gets. Even with all the great tools available it is literally impossible to do a top quality divx encode without spending a great deal of time researching first.
Still the method you are using will still give superior quality results as compared to vcd, but of course thats not really saying much. -
please ignore - mistake
