For the record, the DVD specification does indeed include MPEG1 (not just MPEG2). Although most authoring software prefers full vertical resolution MPEG files, the DVD spec provides for MPEG1 CBR 352x240/288 resolution @ CBR 1150 through 1800 for video; 128kbps through 384kbps for audio, sampled at 48kHz.

So, although the VCD format has its days numbered (albeit numbered in years [I predict another 10 years life for this format]), the MPEG resolution and bitrate, with audio sampled at 48kHz, has a long life ahead of it. My recommendation is: if your VCD player can handle 48kHz audio, start now making your VCDs as XVCDs with 48kHz and dump them all to DVD in future when media is cheap. No additional converting, beaucoup movies per DVD.

Nah... I use paper all the time...
You may be wondering "What does he use paper for?"
Well lets just say that it's illegal here in the USA and I heard it is legal in Amsterdam.
