    hi guys and girls.

    Long time reader, first post.

    I was wondering...how long does it takes to burn a dvd-r 4x?
    because I just got a pioneer A06u.
    and burning a Video_ts folder(from a dvd-5) takes like 30-35 minutes?!? 4x?

    my PC:
    Intel PIII 1Ghz
    512 MB
    4 x 80GB WD...

    What's wrong with your buffer?

I think you're getting underruns, which would make it take longer. In the old days, it would have just failed as a bad burn.

If you have the source and the DVD-R drive on the same IDE cable, move them to opposite channels (IDE cables).

The disc probably is 4x, as Nero rarely lies. What brand media is it?
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Last time I saw Nero buffer going crazy with a Pioneer it was the old DMA/PIO thing.

Try switching that in your device manager and see if the crazy buffer stops and maybe burn speeds goes up.

BTW 4x DVD should be ~15-16min.

  5. theoretically, 4X would take you an avg. of around 15 - 20 min...so, shouldn't be too bad.

Well the buffer shouldn't be like that, and it also only appears to be a 3.8gb burn, it shouldn't take as long as it is.

    thanks all for the help.

I switched the dvd writer to another computer
    AMD xp 1.6
    256MB

but it getting worse. I can't no longer burn a dvd-r
    When I use nero it hangs on differents % (2%, 5%, 7%...)
    I use verbatim and Princo
it also hang like that with Copytodvd

But I'm going to try to put the data and the dvd-r on different IDE.

    maybe re-installing my OS?

BTW, I just got the dvd writer 3 days ago.

I made a perfect ICE age backup (you know how kids handle the DVD, dont you? :P ) and that's about it.

    Ok,

No luck Nero freeze in my AMD PC too!

    switched back to my PIII

    Primary Master 80 WD
    Primary Slave 80 WD

    Secondary Master DVD A06u
    Secondary Slave 80 WD

    Nero 5.5.10.42
    Windows 2000 Pro SP3
    DMA enable on both channel.

I disable the buffer underrun of the dvd-writer and choose "simulate" on nero.

4x: it hangs randomly. by hangs, it likes it doesnt progress anymore(progress bar doesnt move, buffer bar doesnt move), but I can abort, wich mean Nero is still responding.
    DVD-r (princo and verbatim)
But here's come the weird part:

    2x:

Look, there's a warning in the nero log.
Am I forced to burn 2x on my A06u??
Because the burn with 2x seem working
    (not concluded yet)

  9. Install PowerDVD.. with the diagnostic tool, you will enable the DMA

I had the same problem with my second pc.. DMA wasn't working..

  10. I see you have "verify written data" checked, that will add to the burn time because nero will check the data before telling you the burn was successful.

    Ok guys and girls

burn @ 2x is working fine...

I installed PowerDVD, and it says DMA is enable.

Is it "normal" that I cant burn on 4x? My PC is not fast enough?

I did a "speed measurement" with nero...
it says read only a 4x, 4.7x only??
    But when I perform on a CD-r, it's like 40x, 56x...

    how come?

  12. @vpower,

burning speed is limited by the media....if the media you use can only handle 2X, then your DVD burner will adjust the burn speed that is optimized for that particular media you're burning

can't compare burning speeds b/w DVD and CDs...

    4X DVD burning = 5520 KB/s

    4X CD burning = 600 KB/s

think about it this way...the actual burning speed (KB/s) of CD at 18X is roughly the same burning speed (KB/s) of DVD at 2X.

    poopyhead:

    yeah, I know.. but
    time for a 4x dvd-r = time for 4x cd-r

    no?
    Quote Quote
  14. No, re-read poopyheads post. A 4x DVD would burn in the same approximate time as an 18x CD-R.

A 4x CD will most likely take longer to burn than a 4x DVD if you filling both disks to their capacity.

  16. also, keep in mind DVD-R takes more time to write the lead in and lead out than CD-Rs...

usually, CD-R writes the lead in and lead out at the same time after it's finished burning all the files

however, DVD-R writes a lead in before writing any of the files and then writes the lead out after burning all the files....usually takes longer for DVD-R to do those lead ins and outs
