  1. Like most of you, a google search on the keyword "VCD" brought me to VCDHelp.com. Several other keyword seraches, such as "region hack", "macrovision free", "capture cards", "DVD copy", etc. also pointed me to this site.

Became a member a month later when I realized that I cannot create my own post or reply to anyone.

Has no one else come here from Maximum PC ( minimum BS ) mag?

They did a piece on LiteOn as the only CD burner mfg who posted "hacks", firmware upgrades to go from whatever to whatever, and links to cdrfreaks and the like, and I don't recall whether vcdhelp was specifically mentioned (will have to go to back issues ) or whether those sites pointed me here.

Good mag, BTW. CD full of progs each issue, 30 bucks subscribe, 8 per issue, at the rack.

They'll pan a product even if there's a full page ad on the facing page.

Well I was pointed to this site through a dutch forum www.dv-in.nl, created to hack DV cameras so you could use the dv-IN instead of only dv-out . People there were discussing how to backup their videos, and that's where I first heard that you could put a movie on a CD and play it with your DVD-player!
Been lurking here most of the time, as a newbie I felt I didn't have to ask questions, since most of the answers were already here!
Just because you aren't paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

I saw some DVD to VCD software in my local Aldi.

I didn't know that was possible, so like many others I did a google search for DVD to (S)VCD guides and the rest, as they say.........

Keep up the good work DVDRHelp

  8. A friend told me to visit www.vcdhelp.com while we were talking about video cameras and such....

Lucky for me "vcdhelp" is easy to remember and makes sense, otherwise I woulda never made it here. I have a terrible memory, you see.

It started in 2000 with a trip to China with a new Canon Elura MiniDV camera. People in China were talking about VCD players. "Don't you mean DVD?" I asked, "What's VCD?"

Back from the trip with that DV footage, I struggled with MGI (now Roxio) VideoWave. I came here looking for help on making a VCD without an audio sync problem. Turns out it was an infamous (and still uncorrected) bug in VideoWave.

As some others here have, I also lost my original password, but I've been around for just about 3 years. I've learned so much here (thanks, Baldrick!), and even though I don't have a DVD burner yet, I still really enjoy making good VCDs and SVCDs.

It was mid 1999 and finally manage to rip a DVB satellite stream to my HD using a nokia 9600 DVB reciever with DVB2000 firmware and the amazing program "VideoGrabber" from Uli Herman himself (dr Overflow). It was an amazing thing back then...
I also knew about VCD from early 90s, 'cause Philips use to advertise it from MTV Europe in 1992 - 1993! I remember commercials like: The new album of Dr Alban, on LP,MC,CD and VCD" or "The best Videos of Paula Abdul, now only on Philip's VCD" !!!!

So, I thought how I could combine those 2 things together....
I mean, I had a ready mpeg 2 file, there was VCD based on mpeg, there must be a connection.... A way to do it...

It was late Augost / early September 1999 when I searched in Yahoo! for related topics. One of the sites that poped up was VCDHelp. I read it for about 2 months without posting, and I learned many stuff (I also read others, but VCDhelp had the best easy to understand infro from all!).

But when I start posting in January 2000 and asking stuff, most people couldn't answer me, they never even heard most of the things I asked them! I remember most people replying me "You misspell DVD as DVB continuesly, why?"
So, I left VCDhelp for some German / European boards and come back accidentally 4 months later, July 2000.
Things was much better than before, there was people here actually understanding what I was talking about ! So, I stick here (I prefer english than online translated Germans...), and since then I'm an active member here!

I remember some really funny topics, like Sefy's "Ways to spent time during encoding a VCD" (or something like that).
You can't imagine how many ways people had waiting for a VCD to be encode!

found this site through google I think, or yahoo. I was trying to do two things, one was transfer a pal dvd to ntsc and the other was to take some recordings off a standalone dvd-r recorder and put some menus on it while keeping the ac3 sound and picture quality. That was in early May and now I have a beautiful pal->ntsc conversion of my Spanish version of Dellamorte Dellamore on dvd-r and a few of my rare laserdiscs on dvd-r, all with original quality and sound. This site rules, its simply the best and thanks to posters like FulciLives for indepth explanations of these processes.

  12. Hmm... to be honest, I have no idea
Before I found this place, I didn't even know what a VCD is, and that was about 3 years ago (more or less).
