I think I was doing a search for reviews for my dvd player, so I actually used this as a technical reference point for a long time before coming in to the Forums.

I only came into the vcd/svcd/dvd ... scene early in 2002. -
I was living/working in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and cencorship was very high. VHS movies were cut up reall bad in the rental shops and I discovered Laser Disk (without cencorship). That was in 1995.
Over about 18 months I managed to rent every movie in the entire shop and was in search of a new source for movies. VCDs were just coming out and with the black market in Malaysia were readily available and really cheap. Picked up a stand alone VCD player - that was in 1997...
DVD's started coming out soon after returning to Canada and were generally VCD compatable - hence all my movies would play on the new setup. 1998...
Picked up a Digital8 camcorder in 2000, miniDV was still too expensive and 8mm tapes are/were available everywhere. After a while with the camcorder and a firewire card in the computer I was looking for a easy/cheap way of creating home movies. Looked over to the stack of VCD's and figured it couldn't be that difficult to create... Since it was a little more difficult than I though I started looking on-line and Google pointed me to VCDHelp - early 2002... -
I was looking for reviews of video capture hardware. I can't remember the search engine, but it was most likly google.

12/01 I was looking for info. on how to capture and edit my homemade VHS tapes, searched Google and up popped VCDhelp.com.
@Baldrick,
I'm glad you created this website because I'm too lazy.... -
I actually saw some type of banner which was advertising some product to copy DVD's. At the time, I thought it was just some type of crap....but I decided to check into it further. After I went to the site, it claimed you can put DVD's on CD's...which seemed interesting...especially because I didn't need a DVD BURNER..only a CD burner..which I had. That prompted me to do countless hours worth of web searching to gather all the info I could on this.
I checked site after site after site after site...until I came across two...this site and doom9. After reading posts on both sites...I didn't like the personality of doom9, so I signed up here...read countless posts more regarding SVCD's...only did SVCD's for a little while..and was SUPER IMPRESSED with the quality of them......I went from being happy to backup a movie onto 3 CDR's..to being spoiled and only wanting each movie ON TWO CDR's..and no more...to then wanting to experiment with Kwag's 120/180minutes on one Cdr tempplates....to then realzing..that I really wanted to maintain as much quality as possible...so SVCD's became NOT GOOD ENOUGH all of a sudden, ...
then Sony realeses the World's First multi-format drive for an amazingly low price in my opinion. I had read those Sony drives were going to sell for much more then they actually eneded up selling for.....so I got one of those drives...only to find a poster found some type of $50 Mail in Rebate advertisement through rebateshq.com .....I had to wait like THREE MONTHS..but then got my $50 Mail in Rebate for this ALREADY AMAZING Sony Burner....so that was just icing on the cake.......
Talk about the entire amazing transformation process...and talk about an amazing site....WOW....glad I decided to click on what I believed was a "BOGUS" link/ad initially..cuz that sparked it all! ....And here I am now....still knows nothing about DVD and Video editing..etc......but I do a good job of knowing nothing! -
well, i had downloaded the nine inch nails music video collection that used to be housed on www.nineinchnails.net
i wanted to give my (now ex)girlfriend a copy of the videos, VHS seemed like a bad idea as it's music (and stereo, which her VCR isn't) but she -had- just got a DVD player. my dad at this time was working for a local university in the media department, and gave me a cd saying "i think this is for making DVD's or something" and it turned out to be a full copy of DVDit PE (which i only went and bloody lost a month or two before i got my DVD burner!!!) so i gave it a go and made a mini DVD. it didn't work. i had noticed that her DVD player had "VCD" written on it and knew VCD was soemthing to do with "those funny CD-i things" and i also noticed the burning software on the computer had a "VCD" option. i thought "what the hell" and burned my first VCD. after discovering the sound quality on the videos was not great i decided i could replace it with the CD original. tapping the criteria into google led me here, almost two years ago.
awww. it makes me feel all warm inside.
except for the ex girlfriend bit, but that's obviously another story. -
back before i had access to a ridiculously high amount of quality porn movies, i downloaded crap off the p2p services and they would often be messed up.. it was an asf clip and i wanted to convert it to something i could watch on my tv (and skim through easier).. i knew mpeg was better, but i wasnt actually aware of any standards.. since then i've dwelved in to everything, vcd, svcd, divx, dvdr.. i've actually learned quite alot from this site.. (mainly what programs to get and what settings to use)..
this site has grown quite a bit since i joined.. mainly alot of newbs asking the same damn questions over and over and over and over and over and over.. (i know this has been mentioned before, but god its annoying, search dammit)
but yeah, i searched in altavista for how to convert asf files -
Yeah I was looking for info on making VCDs to convert my VHS tapes, but after a very short time reading the boards I decided to run my credit card bill up and get a DVD burner instead.
Oh yeah found via google. -
Me and my friend always talked about dvd burning (and dvdrhelp.com) in AP class...hey, it was better than listening to the teachers boring lectures...

Several year lurker here. I think it was from good ol Doc Mercury. The Doc has his own forums now, but I was comfortable here, so I stayed.
Hey Doc, if your reading this: Thanks Again!
I had been working towards this type of thing for a long time, and getting nowhere fast. Back when the All In Wonder pro came out (the Rage pro or 64 chip, can't remember which) with a whopping 16 MB memory. The Doc helped me get going with his guides and things, and I just expanded from there. There were other noteables along the way that gave me other knowledge too. And then one day while lurking, I was not able to find an answer, so I asked a question.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
A simple search is how it all started. I think this is the best user based forum on the web and I visit a lot of them.

EDIT: I did not notice at first but one of the pages is one of mine that came up on this same search I used way back then. HaHa, and this is the big 500th post!!! Life is good!!!

someone mensioned that they bought a vcd player when there were in japan, and they briefly mensioned that it was like a dvd player, but used CDs instead! this interested me, so i went to google and typed in VCDs, then i found myself here!
i signed up, and impatiently asked some stupid question like "how do i make movies" in some random forum and i dont think i came back for months. i just got hold of dvdx and that was it! then, one day, several months laterr (which is why my average posts/day is so low- because the first few months had NOTHIONG!!!), i became more interested in the site and vcd creative, i strived forknowlege, realised i would learn far more and enjoy it more if i participated in it with others, and the rest is history!!!1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!

The avi was a download of Blackhawk Down. I'd seen it in the cinema and couldn't wait for the DVD (which I bought it on the first day it was released) - the vcd was just a stop-gap.
Ahhhh - the power of broadband. If it wasn't for broadband, I wouldn't have got into making vcds (with enormous help from this site). One year on, I've got 3 extra 120Gb HD, a Canopus ADVC-100, a Sony DRU-500 and a JVC GR-DV2000 camcorder. I think we should start a poll on how much we have spent on upgrades and peripherals in the past year - I reckon we'd be staggered at the total amountRegards,
