  1. The "STILL PICTURES" option in DVDShrink allow me to compress all the extras on my DVD-9 backups to the point where I barely have to compress the main movie (great space saver). I was wondering if this option messes up the chapter listings or IFO crap that InstantCopy does when you strip extras. InstantCopy produces DVD-9 converts that do not play well on my Sony 715 (newer one) and DVDShrink produces DVD-9 converts that play fine on the Sony.

DVDShrink simply seems to be too good to be true...
    What are the catches?

I compress extras down to still frame and turn off their audio. Then reencode the movie with as little compression as possible. Its never messed up my chapters that I noticed and works great.

  3. Hmm, dump ze' audio, never thought of that.

The audio is messed up anyway when you get still frames cuz it's full audio with 1/10th the animation!

    Good idea wise DVDShrink user.

  4. I go one step further -- I use Menuedit and disable the menu items that lead to extras/episodes that I have turned into Stills. You can't make a mistake that way and select things that don't work.

Also, I read recently here were someone took the Shrink files and then reshrunk them -- this was to get the 80% reduction of the still files down even further. Sounded clever to me -- you just either don't compress the movie in the first place, or don't compress it again (in my case I never compress a movie anyway).

Humm, that's surprising. I've just used "Still Pictures" on the end-credits of "Traffic" and the audio is fine.
(I've used "Still Pictures" instead of cropping them off specifically because of the soundtrack I wanted to keep. )

  7. Forget the extras and menus, just use the reauthor feature so you can minimize the compression and don't have to worry about the layer switch issue either.
