  1. What is the best home theater system for a maximum price of $500? For me it is imparitive it has dvd-r and dvd+r support and is progressive scan, it would be nice if it has pro-logic 2 and svcd support but video/sound quality come before the latter two in terms of importance. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me.

%00 for a COMPLETE home theater system? R U Kiddin'?????

My little office system, $500 for speakers and no sub, and that is on $ALE!
Reciever same Near $400-500 (sometimes a little less) just for a reasonable consumer grade unit.

You still need a monitor, cheapos start about $300 and go up from there to thousands or more. I buy a lot of open-box and returns but, it is risky and you, from your question, are not technically educated enough to risk it. All that and no DVD player, yet.

My suggestion, I bought my wife a little Sony CD/DVD/FM/AM with 5 speakers and sub all open box for under $400 a couple years ago. You may wnat to consider buyin such a system for now, then seek to build a better system one piece at a time as budget allows then religate the small sys to the bedroom.

    JD, just my opinion.

  5. Thanks, I was thinking the dav-c770 would be my best choice.

Btw.. arealgijoe I'm not going to go in depth but I am quite 'technically educated.' I suppose I didn't make it crystal clear but I'm not in the market for a monitor. I arleady have two hdtvs, a 55inch and 30inch. This system is for the 30in in my room and i think the dav-c770 will probvide plenty of power for the small space so I'm not 'kiddin.'

  6. UPDATE:

I picked up the dav-c770 and I'm very happy with it. Great progessive scan picture and good power and sound. Like you said it will play anything you throw at it. So far I've confirmed dvd-r, dvd+r and svcd.

The front loading is also very nice. The demise of my last my last 5 disc changer player was a jamming problem, with front loading that can't happen so that's good. The entire system is also very small and sleek which is perfect for something such as a bedroom set up.
