  1. Sorry, a newby question.... I have encoded successfully a movie with ffmpegX. The resulting file plays fine with VLC Player

With VCD Builder I have entered one picture and the encoded mpeg-2 movie file.

I have burned then all this with Roxio Toast on a Powerbook G4/800 (launched and image creation from within VCD Builder) to one CD

I have tried to view the result with the Panasonic DMR-HS2-HDD Videoplayer. The CD is recognized als Video CD, but the movie displays extremly stuttering, as if the player reads short information chunks, plays it, pauses and reads again.

The DVD Player on the powerbook seems not beeing able to deal with this SVCD.

What could cause this behaviour? What error could I have made when I was burning the CD?

You burned it withy toast titanium. Though it will "burn" the cd, I have never had great success with its playback or compatibility on standalone players that support SVCD. Its a player specific issue.
Also, i looked up your player (Panasonic DMR-HS2) and its not a SVCD player. It will play VCD not SVCD. So that could be the other issue.

But you have Panasonic DMR-HS2-HDD as the player, i couldnt find anything on that, only DMR-HS2.

If you know for a fact it plays SVCD, Id try a svcd burner like Missing Media Burner or Firestarter FX. both can be gotten off versiontracker.com

Otherwise, you will have to use VCD settings for video (mpeg1) not mpeg2

    Oh, also I forgot

You said DVD PLAYER ON POWERBOOK wont play SVCD. Thats correct, its a DVD player only.

To play the disk on yoru powerbook, you need Video Lan Client
    insert disk
go to open, then open disk
    choose VCD
    push ok
then push play, it will read off the disk

these are not DVD's thats why it wont work, also why a non SVCD compliant dvd player wont be able to play these disks.

  4. So Toast Titanium isn't as good for this kind of job?

The Panasonic DMR-HS2-HDD is a DVD Player/Recorder with a Harddisk included. There is also a similar Panasonic existing, but without HD. I guess The HS2 you have found is one that I have. So its explained, why SVCD does not work.

When I give the SVCD to someone with a Windows PC he must the also download first a player software like the VLC?

With the Panasonic I am able to transfer from DV Camera to HD, and to record from HD to DVD-R. May be the way to go directly to DVD's is better than to make SVCD? except the costs of the raw material.

    1. SVCD for PC they will need something like VIDEO LAN CLIENT, which is avaliable for PC. there are other SVCD players also.
    2. It would be best to go to DVD if you have the ability to do that. Cost wise, it is a little more, but it will save you time and headache going to SVCD. Personally, dvd's are coming down in price drastically. You can get nice generic dvd-r's for about 1$ per disk, sometimes even as little as $.80 if you buy in bulk.

True, the reason the SVCD didnt work, is most likely that player wont play svcd disk.

to test the disk you made use VLC on your mac, put the disk in, go to file open disk choose SVCD.

keep in mind that your computer could care less how its burned, so the toast ones will most likely work. But players are more specific.
my dvd player wont even touch a svcd burned by toast. It just says NO DISC
but burn the same files with MMB or Firestarter FX and it plays just like its a dvd.

    hope that makes since

  6. indeed, "standards" seem not always to be common and understood for all devices... My powerbook G4 could not play the DVD's which I have burned on the Panasonic, but other DVD players could. Since X.2.6 it works with the majority of the DVD's, but not with all from the same sorce. But the same DVD which runs now on the G4, does not play on a DVD player - it simply displays "loading" for eternity, while a SVCD on the same player works well....This random behaviour makes Video authoring still quite frustrating.
