First of all, may I simply say this is just a personal observation of a culture that seems to be developing, rather than a request for action.
It was a fine line between posting this in the feedback section or the off-topic section, but I bit the bullet and stuck it in here.
    Right, my point
The site attracts idiots, that much is clear.
They come along and post stupid questions like how do I split my Matriox Relaoded avi file and get offended when some helpful soul posts extracts of the AUP.
Then, someone posts a sarcastic comment to the original poster, someone else posts an agressive remark and again someone else ridicules the newbie for stupidity.
All this time this niave fool get madder and madder, his blood pressure rises and he attacks.
He accuses the group of having an "old boys network" and screams obscentities as much as he can.
    His crime?
Being stupid enough not to think before he posted.
I would prefer some of the more established member's not to goad this poor unfortunate soul onto the path of self-destruction, and a polite note from a moderator that these unhelpful remarks are not helping might defuse a possible explosive situation.
I understand the benefit of self-moderation, we all have a part to play in keeping this site free of illegal activity but sometimes members go far too far, without any recourse.
By all means issue your yellow cards to the original poster (or if it's his first offence do as you please, be leniant, whatever...!), but also consider there are other people in this "love triangle" who aren't helping, and a polite word to remind them of this fact might address the many, many flame wars curently occuring.
    Just thinking aloud here folks

  2. So if I get your message correctly you are trying to say that if a member comes along a post that violates the AUP then they should report it to a moderator and leave it for them to take action?

Sounds good personally as it would probably stop a lot of the flame wars between members at the moment.

I think that's the politist word I've seen on the subject in quite a while. Well said.

Virtually, yes, although those folks who simply quote the AUP in a reply help more than they know.

That's the intention, it's all getting rather silly and is pretty unproductive.
I mentioned it above but it's one thing to self-moderate, it's another to act a complete arse.
Hell, I even saw one flame war whereupon the original poster was flamed in a completely seperate post. He had clearly been pursued from his inflamatory comments in his first post and attacked again.
    Not good really.

true - it does seem like there is more of that lately... or maybe it's just the first time I've been involved in a few...

    Absolutely.
Man, even the moderator's get involved and post reply after reply after reply, when clearly the only intention of some of these threads is to cause mayhem.
Lock the thread sooner for crying out loud, although some moderator's are clearly reluctant to do this as they are afraid of being accused of bias.
If the thread is going nowhere, if it's simply an attempt to annoy and antagonise then lock it!!!!!!!!!

It really started to get bad when the Sony dual format came out last year. This moved DVD creation from the "expert" realm into the "household item" realm. Many users either didn't do their homework, or were mislead by the computer salesman into thinking that all they needed to do to "back-up" their DVDs was to slap in a blank DVD. They got really irritated when reality slapped them in the face, and they took out their frustrations here - on us. Most people nowadays never created a VCD or a SVCD, so they don't really understand the pitfalls.

Also, I really get tired of answering the same question over and over and over, when a quick forum search could have located the proper answer. On these posters, I will sometimes get extremely "short" and often sarcastic with them - but it depends on how my day is proceeding!

If these really bother you, then I would suggest that you "gird your loins", as it isn't going to do anything but get worse. But take heart in knowing that the really obnoxious ones don't last very long, because they are stupid. Just remember that ignorance can be cured, but stupidity is forever!

I couldnt agree more. I know i have only been a member of this form for a short time and do not post often but i have been coming here for at least 9 months now and I have learned alot froum the guides and searching the form for answers to my problems. The problem is the computer companies and slaes men like you said. I see many comericals on t.v. for pc's with dvd burners and they make it sound so easy. I myself have noticed now that i know more about what i am doing that there are alot of post asking newbie questions over and over again. People just seem to be lazy these days and want everyone else to do it for them. That is what bothers me is lazy people.

I am in almsot the same boat as Reaper88, I have been visting this site for sometime, but have just recently decided to join the forum. I do not resent helping newbies at all as we all had to start somewhere and sometimes they just overlook a forum search or don't know how to find out what they need, but they soon learn to search the forum or the guides section before putting up a post. The only thing I could scorn newbies for (I am also a newbie to the forums) is the fact that other users may tell them their post is of no meaning to this forum or they are deliberately trying to infuriate other members to start a flame war and all they have are arrogant replies to other users who are merely trying to keep the forum clean. The main thing is these newbies hate apologies more than regrets so the slagging matches can keep going on until the thread is locked. Remember I am not scorning all newbies, as most are pleased to recieve help from other members which makes other users remember how we may know a lot but newbies cannot sometimes fathom out problems and we can sometimes appear arrogant to them, this is just for the few newbies who like to think they should be exempt from the rules.

  12. Part of the problem is that certain members act as if this forum is the singular soul of their life. They are getting way too worked up over something that means absolutely nothing! A good example is format wars, something I love to poke fun at. This is not an issue where the blood pressure of people should get elevated!

You can't moderate that kind of a problem.

It doesn't bother me, if a stupid question is asked and hasn't already been responded to in a format such as 'that is against forum policy' then I'll respond, otherwise I'll ignore it.
What does bother me is the people that are sarcastic and short with these people time and time again, the one's who seem to make a hobby out of it, the self-appointed 'moderator's who never made it', who then take it out on the newbies.

I agree totaly that this site is now experiencing Newbie invasions, or just stupidity invasions. The amount of questions getting repeated daily is staggering and offensive to many on this site. I lurked in this site for nearly 6 months before I became an official member and started posting, now people just want instant answers to idiotic questions immediately from the "old boys network". I personally have countless hours of testing and problem solving invested.

The people that are making these offenses in my opinion have no creative talent or technical ability. They are not capable of making their own headway into a problem, creating a guide or even creating their own media content. These are movie copiers, plain and simple and they found this site and a wealth of knowledge to exploit.

I think the moderators should impose a little tighter control on these posts, especially when they blatantly ask about "backing" up a certain movie title that nobody in their right mind would own. We know you aren't backing it up, you rented it and are making 30 copies for your firends. Why should we help with that kind of piracy.

  20. @tygrus2000,

    that's a little bit harsh, isn't it??

    1) certain forums inherently lend themselves to help ppl who wanna copy DVDs. there's no problem with that. not everyone needs to make their own movies, unless they're in the p0rn business :P some ppl just wanna make legit backups of their DVDs. i.e. kids are notoriously clumsy with DVDs..so a lot of parents want to make copies and let their kids play with those. in other cases, there are out-of-print DVDs that aren't made anymore. kinda need to back those stuff up because you can't get a replacemnt.

    2) it seems like you're saying those ppl who don't write guides "have no creative talent or technical ability" ..... false

    3) i personally don't like the MPAA...as they're GREEDY, GREEDY, and oh so GREEDY. but, i don't let that cloud my judgement :P ppl need to be given the "benefit of the doubt" when they say they're "backing up" a DVD because you honestly don't know if they're actually backing up something they own or not. however, i have no sympathy for those ppl who say they wanna convert movies they downloaded from online...even, specifically from P2P. those are pretty clear they're just pirating movies.

I just wish Everybody, new, old, inbetween would knock off the " " when they say "backup". I backup, no quotes, no "nudge-nudge" "wink-wink", my own DVDs. Most are relatively expensive, some are 5 buck crap DVDs, but they're at least good enough to play with.

There are some people who seem so damn good at this that they can write a guide good enough to help anyone. There are some guides so damn complicated, you might as well try it from scratch, you need 20 pieces of software and an IT certification to use them.

And, hell's bells, you gotta write a guide before you can be fully accepted?

As to Tygrus remarks, it's just as I posted in Cecilio's guide thread, almost all the OEM, Dell, Compaq, HP machines include a DVD burner. They make big bucks on them, the uninformed haven't the foggiest notion what to do with them.

They put their favorite DVD in, holler, "Look, hon, I'm gonna make a copy of Lilo 'n Stitch for the kids, see, it was worth it to go the extra 200 bucks for this machine." Sometime later, no copy. Somehow they learn of this site, and start asking "dumb" questions.

I have to give a lot of you guys credit for not getting too po'd. You help. A few others DO get po'd, and start flaming. Hey, they don't know enough to know what questions TO ask, they are just crying out for help. So, help 'em. Point out where to go.

Give a link to a topic on the left, not just a left arrow. There is a LOT of info over there, not all of it germane, and some of it, possibly not in the right place, or form, for a real newcomer.

If I, personally, had to post one bitch, it would be "Need help...." and no indication of what you need help with. Please, give at least some specifics in the title of your thread.

    poopyhead,

I'm 100% in agreement with your post of 22:43. It is as good as any I have seen on this Forum, let alone this thread. Congratulations!

poopyhead, maybe I am a little harsh, but I hate to see a good forum like this one go downhill. Probably the most simple topic on this site is something like avi to vcd or something like that and you know what, there has been a guide to that for nearly 2 years, yet every day there is some moron that comes and asks again.

There are many more examples of this type of laziness from some of the latest members. A good majority of the current topics are of this simplistic nature, only the odd one nowdays is something new or ground breaking or a major hurdle overcome. I certainly dont post to the forum unless I am at my wits end in trying to solve something and I will skim through dozens of posts in this forum and others before I resort to bothering people. Yes, its a place for learning and sharing info, but c'mon, do we need to revist the basics everytime a new member registers. The guides are on the left and the forum has an awesome search engine.

When I see somebody saying they need to "backup" their copy of some title that you couldnt even give away, like Ghost Ship or some other crap that have been mentioned on the forum, I cant help think its straight up copying and underground distribution. I have no love for the MPAA, but they are going to eventually be drawn to a site like this and if they see people with posts, like "Help me copy such and such a movie", its only a matter of time before it this site becomes a target for shutdown.
