Tygrus,
I agree, you are being too harsh. Half a million posts, god knows how many guides, which anyone can make and post, no "peer review", and you expect the guy who just bought a machine with a DVD burner to automatically know how to use it
The forum is missing one topic: For Experts Only. That one would keep "newbies" from bothering people who are"serious" about their hobby, especially if Baldrick would put a time stipulation on when you could post in it, not 24 hours, but, say, 2 years. You made it. Probably 90 % of the posters do not. It would be a lonely forum if 90 % of the members could only read, while lurking.
I haven't the foggiest idea what Ghost Ship is, but if all you would backup is top sellers, not some of the crap you couldn't even give away, well, hell's bells, write a guide that says "To back up the 3 worthwhile movies made this year, use template A, B, or C". Anything else is irrelevant, as WE think that movie is crap.
Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the question that is unasked.
Well, Dilbert's boss once said " Oh, Christ, there is such a thing as a stupid question, and I don't know the answer."
You know what would be a good idea? If Baldrick changed the ID under your name to reflect your age. If some people saw a 60 year old asking a "stupid" question, he might just infer he just bought his first 3000 buck 'puter, complete with DVD burner, and give the old fart some consideration. If it shows 18 years, man, you grew up with this stuff, you don't know the basics, what the hell did you do in school?

Poopyhead,
You'll excuse me if I thought you were English.
But, you are confusing me even more. I am East coast time, GMT - 6 hours.
You should be GMT - 9 hours.
Your post showed 6 hours different from my time, and my time, apparently is 2 hours off also..
It is 2:53 here, right now, you should be at 11:53, still Friday.
I do not know what will be the timestamp on this post. If you are interested, I'll post it to you, here in the thread, or PM, as you wish.
My head is starting to hurt over this.
Sorry -

hey, Tweedledee,
I was 58 my last, I feel entitled to call us what we are to this general audience. I don't know if you used computers all your working life, at work. I didn't. I had to learn all this stuff to keep my youngest up to date while she was in college, without going broke.
I got interested for it's own sake and now love it.
Now, you can't tell me you don't know a bunch of older people getting machines who want to get into this stuff, and I don't mean DVDs and the like.
I'm trying to get something going for my kids granddad, my "former" father-in-law, as I'm divorced, and I don't think he can wait to get on line and see what the hell all is out there.
You don't gotta be young to enjoy this stuff, as you, you old fart, oughta know. But, some of us, who haven't grown up with it might need a little more help. It really ain't easy, I don't care what the "kids" say, and that includes my own.
How'd you get into this stuff? PM me if you'd care to carry on a dialogue.
Cheers, from one old fart to another. Glad to see not all are teens, or 20's.
George
BTW, I'll second your last line. -
Tweedledee,
BTW, is that your youngest g'son as an avatar, or are you old enough to have a great? If I can shrink it enough to post it, should post my newest, 2 months old yesterday, the 31st, apple of my eye. 13 pounds, already. Spits up pretty good when Jedo holds him.
Ah, well, everything is washable. -
The avater is ME, about 1940. I'm a driving instructor and teach mostly teenagers, they put me on to Kazaa and other stuff. Then I started ripping dvd's about 18 months ago. I think I know more about computers than many of the kids I teach now. It was only 7 years ago when I learned to turn one on. This forum is terrific and I feel that many of the members are like friends,if you can understand that.

I see no problem being harsh if the poster deserves it. If it's a well constructed post, and they've tried to find the info they need, but either don't understand the terminology or aren't sure which step they should take first, i'll reply. however when i see:
i wanna copy this film but what software do i need? where do i get it?
then i see no reason to be anyhting other than sracastic. if you tolerate lazy behaviour they'll just continue to be lazy. -

Flanina,
Re: " I see no problem...........they'll just continue to be lazy." I don't want to copy your whole post, takes too much room.
But, with this post, I agree. A beginner who is actually trying to learn deserves a little consideration. He'll get the hang of manueveriing his way around the site, and start learning on his own, and future posts will be more to the point, more "deserving" of help.
Go back in this thread and re-read posts by Pixel, SLK001, Indolikaa, some others. Yes, they get exasperated, sometimes, we all do, but they're actually the light of reason on the whole Forum. ( Well, Indolikaa does like to take jabs at silly remarks from some of the gripers, like the format wars thing ).
Will,
You miss my point, entirely. There was a bit of sarcasm in my post, which you quoted and to which you so eloquently "retorted".
You missed the meaning of the remark " 2 years before you are allowed to respond".
That was intended a little sarcastically, as well. " Might take you 2 years, but not me". Congrats. You've been posting for 10 months. I didn't say it took 2 years to learn. I said there ARE people here who would prefer to have a little "klatsch" of only their "peers", "experts" if you will. If you read their posts, you will easily pick them out. They're not all 2 year people, either. I've been here, registered 8 months, and, should you have paid attention, there's one guy, 2 weeks older than me on the board, who will still throw in a "newbie" or a "newb" in most of his flames aimed in my direction, even if it is his first post in a 6 page topic.
As to the age Icon, you missed that one, also. That is more or less to say that the poster may be a recent retiree who just bought his first machine, complete with DVD burner, as SLK001 mentioned way back on page 2. They don't have any idea what they're doing, and, again, a "cry for help".
But do they get it? Depends on who is reading it. Some people, sure, pal, try this, then go to this LINK, not, " Hey, Jerk, you see all those boxes over there?<".
Scan some of the topics and count the proportion of one to the other. You might be surprised.
As to the "I'm a girl" icon, we don't seem to need it. Everybody's hormones seem to zero them in, even if they sometimes are wrong, ala, Hot_krissy, whose Frederick's clip avatar had all the boys salivating. LMAO.
There you have a point. 18 doesn't make you an expert. It does make some think they are.
To sum this up, I don't know why you're still PO'd, our differences stem from a thread locked weeks ago. To sarcastically jump on every comment I make is beneath you, or should be.
Ah, well, who the hell cares?
Cheers,
George -

I genuinely misunderstood the intent of your posts, but hell, I'm not perfect.
I make comments as I see them, regardless of this 'past' you speak of, and to be honest I'm embarrassed for you that someone of your age, someone who at times can demonstrate clear, undiluted wisdom, would try such a shitty trick as this.
Our differences of opinion on the Tony Martin case are exactly that, and if I remember correctly our discussion ended with positive emoticon, no?
Also, I seem to remember my first response to one of your posts was along the lines of 'we need posters like you gmatov, stick around'.
Not that you'd care but with drivel such as you've demonstrated here today now I'm not so sure
But, as you say George...

Will,
No trick intended, as I don't even know what trick you are referring to. As I am an old fart, it must have gone over my head, again. Takes me a while to get a reply into the thread, as my hands are a little shaky; I have a tendency to hit the wrong key on occasion, so have to correct my spelling before I hit submit.
If you re-read the post that led to this whole thing, ( this one, not the one that you posted to open the thread ) everything I said fairly well follows what you said in the opener. I didn't chime in till a number of antis got onto the old "stupid newbies" again.
If you recall, there was a humongous thread on this subject a few months ago, the gist of which was " Why the hell should I help them? Let them learn how to do it all on their own, same as I did. I read all the guides on this board, and knew all about it, before I made my first post!".
Oh, BTW, most of these posters "lurked" here for at least a couple years before they made their first post, even though the site is only about 2 1/2 years old.
I'm sure that it won't bother you much, but "Not that you'd care...." pretty well sums it up.
I'll take the emoticon, this time, at face value.
Cheers, ( short version ),
George -
Speaking as a 'stupid newbie'...
I lurked on this site for a long time before I made my first post. I spent a long time reading all the guides and studying the threads before I felt like I knew just enough to be dangerous. And still, it took nearly two weeks of trying before I made my first DVD to my specifications.
The problem I see is we have an influx of 'freeloaders' who want intstant gratification and don't want to learn just a little more about the hobby. I mean, come on! When your first posting is 'I just downloaded Matrix Reloaded, how do I burn it to DVD?' you obviously didn't take the time to read anything about the website, like the colored words in boldface that tell you what you can and cannot post!
This is not a hobby that will provide instant gratification. If you need that, follow the directions found at jeex's signature line. This hobby does require some level of knowledge before it can be practically applied. That knowledge is free, but you have to be willing to work a little to receive it.
.indolikaa. -
i'm right with you indolikaa. i was on here for a while. i read every guide on here (and that was before it got all orgainized the way it is now). it took a while, but i finally backed up my first disc. i was real happy the first time it worked.
so when i see all these new people come on here saying, " i just downloaded a movie, how can i get it to work on my dvd player? can someone tell me how step by step?" i feel as though that is a complete slap in the face of all the people that took the time out to write the guides. His name was MackemX
What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
Indolikaa and Conquest,
I agree with both your last posts, Indolikaa's as to the second paragraph, especially. Sorry, just re-read, and Conquest's second is the same theme.
Those types of ?s merit a link to the guides and a come back in a couple weeks or so, when your question is a little more intelligent.
I was regged here long before my "official" date on the left, I don't know why my log on-pword quit working, but had to re-up to get back on. I was here strictly for VHS-CD-R help then, as I didn't even have a DVD player.
Everyone was a lot more accepting, probably because fewer people were buying OEM machines, with the DVD burner option, so there weren't as many people trying to do this stuff. It WAS vcdhelp, at that time, and, probably as much of the site's content was devoted to capture as it is, now, to DVD rip and backup.
I don't know why we even bother taking a protective tack. Sure as shootin', tomorrow or the next day, someone will ask a similar question and get a similar, nasty, response.
Jeez, that couldn't be ol' Human Nature raising its ugly head again, could it?
Cheers, (sorry, couldn't help myself, used the salute too long )

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
Nah, not trying to start something. This subject will come up again and again. It's as though those doing the " That's been answered a thousand times! " retorts can remember that, but can't remember that THIS whole subject has been hashed and re-hashed numerous times. More or less as though there's nothing interesting going on, I'll start this "stupid newby" thread up all over again. Maybe they should do a forum search, find all the other newby threads and just post there, carry that one to ridiculous lengths.
BTW, my last was going to BE my last on the subject. Now, this one is. No one is going to change anyone's mind on this, so I have just given up. I still have watch this post checked; I'll continue to read, but my last word has been posted. Has to be. Some one else we know got some serious flaming for saying that and then posting again. Wouldn't want that, would we?
Cheers, ( Conquest, if this is what got your last remark out, sorry; I'm still gonna use it, just no more sidebars.),
George
edit: Sorry, only saw your reply, not to whom it was directed.
edit: I realize now. I am editing as I said it was my last. Technically, some might say I'm not keeping my word. EOP -
Vance and Conquest, please don't carry your squabbles over into another thread.
