Hard Drive Recorders

I was wondering if someone could help me out here. I am looking for a Hard Drive recorder, similar to a TIVO but without the subscription. I was looking into the Apex ADR-1000 but it looks like it's release has been delayed. Can somoene please point some of the best ones out to me. Thanks!!

How about the Pan DMR_HS2 or the new one DMR-E80 (80GB HDD) ?
You can save your recorded movies to DVD later if you want, this is what TIVO does not have (TIVO has the subscription instead )

Another option is the pre-4000 ReplayTV models (the subscription is built in to the cost of the unit).

This is a long shot as they are no longer being made and most likely you can find one on eBay. I happen to have the 2020 model myself, so good luck finding one.

I can't believe RCA is the only company to figure out that ppl might actually want a tivo like program guide with the recorders.

On a side why is that none of the new dvd recorders have at least a TBC in them to clean up bad vhs tapes when transfering to dvd? Is this just plain imcompetence?

My choice was the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000. Offered by Time Warner Cable.

Fully integrated into their digital guide and it allows for recording of two selections at the same time. Costs about $7.00 more a month on the cable bill but at the rate technology is changing I felt it was a low risk expense.

For off cable stuff I have the Panasonic E30 integrated into my entertainment center. Not a bad choice at the time. I would recommend some of the newer Panasonic models.

Also have a PC with a couple of 120 gig hard drives integrated into the center for capturing less vital stuff and DVD ISO storage which is networked with 6 PC's around the house. It's more of a video server and works great.

The new Pioneer that is coming out is really amazing. But you would need a cast-iron stomach to swallow the $4,000 price tag. It's really a pro unit with component video input, along with XLR audio inputs. Here's Pioneer's link.

Anyone else try one of these? I like the idea but dont want a TIVO since you gotta hook it up to the phone line and pay a service fee.

Our Circuit City's in Okla. have half a dozen of the RCA 7000's that if I'm not mistaken does the whole pause TV, record TV thing...

CircuitCity had two different brands of the hard disk recorders when I was there a few days ago. I think they were like $300 but I don't think there is a way to get the data from the recorders to a computer so IMO they are useless.

The $4000 PRV-LX1 is really a pro model like Firewire said. It's basically in the same league as the Casablanca digital video editor lines: Avio, Prestige and Kron.

You can get a card & use your computer to store programs too...

That way you can update your HD.
