  1. What format should I use to record video for a max quality on a HDTV-ready TV (1080i max), if my miniDV specs are 720x480? Is there a way to get loseless on a cdr (not DVD)? Note that even if I can only fit minimal time on a single cd I would still consider it. No DVD burner just yet.

The best standards compliant format is SVCD. I use them on a 42" 16:9 TV with good success.

  3. That what I was thinking. Here is my view of the process, tell me if I am missing anything:

    1) 16:9 Wide format camera setting
    2) Capture in DV format using Video Studio 7 (loseless quality capture)
    MPEG-2 compression (using TMGEmpeg)
    3) Start SVCD project and just add MPEG-2 project to it (already edited, titled)
    4) Burn and enjoy

    Now, couple little questions:
    a) Which codec is best to go to MPEG-2?
    b) If I deinterlace the video after capture and before compression - do I lose any quality? My TV is progressive scan (digital), could I have problems there?
    c) Would RCA or Component hook up between DVD and TV make a difference for quality playing back SVCD?
    d) Is SVCD going to be the loseless quality copy of miniDV?

no. depending on your settings, you can get pretty good results but it is not loseless.

The only way to get it to yur TV lossless is by playing the tape directly to the TV. Even DVD looses quality
