what i want to know is that if i get a capture card can i plucg my dvd player into it and capture the video as vob files

i have used these forums and learnt about the conversion process without capture cards but would like to know the asics using a capture card and if it is a quicker process

So what you really want to do is take the original vob files and back them up to a dvd+-r? y dont u just rip the vob files from the original in your drive. no need to run from standalone to capture card if you have a dvd drive.

You can capture with capture cards in AVI or MPEG. If you want VOBs you need ripping software and a DVD-ROM drive in your computer. But I have never heard of a DVD player that outputs in VOB. If you have a hardware encoder, you can also take your DVD player output and encode it into DV and send it into your computer via firewire, if you have a firewire card installed.
    Hello.

  4. like i said i have no experience with capture crads but from what i just read it seems all i need to do is play my svcds on my standalone dvd player while its hooked upto the capture card and save them as mpg's

then rip the mpgs and chapter them using editing software before burn them to dvd as vobs

I would say give your DVD player the day off, and look at this guide.

  6. You want easier but I don't know what you are doing currently?

Save MPEG file of SVCD to HD
    1. change resolution header to 352x480 using DVDpatcher (entire file)
    2. Use movie factory {or other authorware} to make a dvd format on HD (check setting so program does not re-encode)
    3. change resolution header to 480x480 using DVDpatcher (entire file) on each VOB created.
    4. Burn to DVDR

If you want to join several SVCD into one then between step 2 and 3
    delete IFOs
rename VOBs so second set is in sequence
then rebuild IFOs with IFOedit or DVDfab

This is a trick that should work since it sounds like you DVD player is also playing SVCDs.
