Who's tried WinXP SP1 + Internal drive in USB 2.0 case?

Who's using Windows XP SP1 (which has USB 2.0 support) with an internal IDE DVD writer inside a USB 2.0 enclosure?

Just wondering who is using this combo and whether you have been succesful or failed.

I have not tried before but it does not make sense to try - why not connect directly to IDE interface!? If you fit in the USB enclosure, its likely that you can succeed but the HD speed may be hampered, I guess.

I have a Sony DRU500A in a USB 2.0/1394 enclosure, and I've been using it all week with a WinXP/SP1 machine (I normally use 1394 but this time I've been using USB 2.0). No problems to report. Everything works great.

A bigger issue is the power supply of the external enclosure. DVD writers (especially the Sony drive) can be quite power hungry and a lot of enclosures use wimpy external wall-wart power supplies that aren't up to the job.

Don't know about USB, but firewire works great! My DVD burner actually works better in the firewire case than it did internally. My PC uses much less CPU during burning than it did before. I would expect USB to work fine too cause it's faster than firewire.

Becuase i need the portability of hooking it up to my 2 laptops and a PC.

I thought you said put the USB enclosure inside the computer! External USB works fine with Windows98 or newer Windows OS.

I know that USB 2.0 devices work with newer OS's.. it's just that I've read reports of DVD writers failing over USB 2.0 in winxp. Just want confirmed reports that ppl are indeed using this configuration.

Actually firewire is faster than USB 2.0

Firewire is 400mbps
USB 2 is 480mbps

Thats just headroom. I used both. Firewire has less hiccups. It is also much much fasters. Try hooking up a couple of writers and do multiple copies and you will know what I'm talking about. Hey always look at the real world test! everything looks good on paper but when you use it its always different!

As Firewire is isochronous, in reality, it is much faster for sustained transfers (e.g., from an external HDD) than USB 2.
