Probably becaus eth correct bitrate for VCD is 1150kbps (ish!). By using such a high bitrate, you are creating an XVCD (non-standard). Your DVD player probably can't read the data off the disc fast enough to play such a high bitrate, hence the slow jittery play.

    Use a lower bitrate

no its probably that your dvd player can read XVCDS, but use a lower bitrate like 1868 as your max video+audio as that is the max for the mpeg 1 vcd reselution.

wha??? since xVCD isn't standard, there ISN"T a standard max bitrate for it. xVCD is just any MPEG1 not falling within standard VCD specs...there's no limit on how far you can stray. personally, my pioneer can handle upto 2500 kbit/s bitrate for xVCDs.

@xsbs52x, best bet is to make your VCD standard compliant by lowering bitrate to 1150 kbit/s CBR.

otherwise, first check out your player here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers to see if it plays xVCDs and the max bitrate it can support.

  6. I've captured as high as 2.24, they play on all 3 apex players fine, 500A, 500B, 1100W(the vcd capable one, not the later model). After seeing this picture quality, I am redoing my lower bitrated (x)vcds. Standard bitrates no longer acceptable. But still waitin' for dvd recorders to come down and get the bugs out.

    1) not many bugs left

    2) price is already cheap enough. deals on DVD+RW drives end up being UNDER $100. DVD+RW media is generally more expensive, so i paid more upfront for a DVD-RW burner. i've seen DVD-RW drives (regular price on pricewatch.com) for as low as $129. with cheap DVD-R media nearly $0.80/disc, it's already pretty cheap.

only drives still expensive is the dual format drives, most of which are at least $200. however, that's still pretty cheap.

    Partially true.

    xVCD is NOT a "standard".
VCD max is 1150 according to the books of VCD.

BUT 1856k MPEG1 is the max supported in the DVD spec. Most DVD players can play 1856k, whether the info is on CD or DVD media.

Try to encode max VCD at 1856k.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  9. well my dvd player has no problem playing xVCD at 2.5 mbps, but at 3 mbps it plays slightly slower than it should. would i be able to use a higher bitrate with xSVCD? or would it still jitter at the high bitrate?

as XSVCD is still on the same CD media, it would probaly have the same bitrate limitations as it is usually down to how fast the drive can read the disc.
