I have AVI, which I can play in DivX Player 2.1. It can be open in VirtualDub - in file info it shows "DivX 5.0.5. codec". But I need to play that AVI with subtitles and DivX Player seems cannot do that. So far I used BSPlayer, no problems with subtitles so far, just put .sub file with same name as .AVI to the same dir. But with mentioned AVI (and several others) it shows "Unknown file format (DIV3)". I tried to search this problem on several forums - it was recommended to install ffdshow. I did that, but problem remains. I tried to open the file in GSpot, I see ffdshow as first (out of 3) codec, which could be able to play that file, but GSpot also says that it can't render that file. I also tried 2 codecs packs (k-lite, all in 1) but nothing changed. AVI is OK, DiVX Player 2.1 plays it well. Any ideas what might be wrong ? P.S.: I have windows 2000, SP3.

Why not use Virtual Dub to render the subtitles on your video?
Hello. -
Let's forget subtitles for now. The first step I need - to be able to play that file in BSPlayer. I search also on google forums. I was recommended to uninstall all codecs and install ffdshow. Here's my results:
I did this:
- unistalled all codecs, all players (including Windows Media player 9
upgrade).
- After that, opening mentioned movie reported no codec able to play
this movie (description of video format is div3, DivX 3 Low-Motion)
- installed newest DirectX, restarted PC
- installed BSPlayer, GSpot still reports no codec
- installed ffdhow
- GSpot reports 'codec is installed' - 'ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decorder,
... pres button Render
- but after pushing Render button, message changes : Nonetheless DirectShow is apparently NOT able to play this file. No further information is available concerning the apparent discrepancy.'
- BSPlayer reports Unknown file format (DIV3), no use of seeting Use DivX 4 decoder for MP43, DIV3, DIV4 as some recommend
- When trying to open in VirtualDub: "Couldn't locate decompressor for format DIV3 (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V3 [Hack DivX Low-Motion]). VirtualDub requires Video for Windows (WFW) compatible codec to decompress video ..."
If it would be of any help, there's copy of all codecs now installed

A few comments - I found out, that VirtualDub doesn't use DirectShow, so the error message is obvious. So let's go back to the BSPlayer problem. Some users in various forums say, that the file may be damaged, so I must fix it with DivFix. I don't think so. Reasons:
- In DivX Player 2.1 it plays perfectly (to be specific, the mentioned movie is Moulin Rouge, also Panic Room behaves the same way)
- I tried to fix this file with DivFix. It reported several errors (Corrupted data at ... ) , first error after 1:18 (see below)
- I opened this fixed file in GSpot and bingo! It could be rendered !
- BUT ! The repaired file I am able to play only till 1:18 (previously reported error in DivFix), after that the picture is totally corrupted , only coloured smudges are seen.
