i'm thinking about buying a dvd-rw drive and the fastest one i found were 4X. my question is typically, how long does it take to burn a dvd? there's over 4gb of data to be burned and it's only 4X. i'm not going to buy a dvd-rw if it's going to take me hours to burn one dvd.

I have a 2X DVD-R. 50 minutes from the time I decide I am going to make a copy. That is with DVDShrink, if nothing goes wrong.

Yeah, the full procedure takes about an hour, more or less, depending on the size of the original DVD and the speed of the drives (and the media).
Burning speeds (according to mrbass)

Those numbers are for full discs. Not couting the lead in/out 1x DVD = 1350kb/s (1x CD = 150kb/s). So you can just do the math. As the above pic shows thou for me to burn a full disc on my Pioneer A05 takes ~15. And most of the discs I burn are full (ie. I use the highest video bitrate I can).

It always depends on what you want to do. I think you got "burning" a DVD mixed up with comparing how fast a CD is burned. We are talking apples and oranges.
