  1. i'm thinking about buying a dvd-rw drive and the fastest one i found were 4X. my question is typically, how long does it take to burn a dvd? there's over 4gb of data to be burned and it's only 4X. i'm not going to buy a dvd-rw if it's going to take me hours to burn one dvd.

I have a 2X DVD-R. 50 minutes from the time I decide I am going to make a copy. That is with DVDShrink, if nothing goes wrong.
    Hello.

  3. Yeah, the full procedure takes about an hour, more or less, depending on the size of the original DVD and the speed of the drives (and the media).

    Burning speeds (according to mrbass)

  4. Those numbers are for full discs. Not couting the lead in/out 1x DVD = 1350kb/s (1x CD = 150kb/s). So you can just do the math. As the above pic shows thou for me to burn a full disc on my Pioneer A05 takes ~15. And most of the discs I burn are full (ie. I use the highest video bitrate I can).

  5. a 2.4X burn for a full 4.3GB of data takes me just under 25 min

Well it's a bit false... I have a 2X drive and it never took more than 27 minutes

1X took 57minutes (but I only burned 1 time at this speed)

It always depends on what you want to do. I think you got "burning" a DVD mixed up with comparing how fast a CD is burned. We are talking apples and oranges.

You did 4.37GB DVD-R in 27mins or less or was it 2X DVD+R? I haven't come across 2X DVD+R so I haven't been able to test it. I've tested all those other speeds though. Obviously the burn times are less if you are burning 3.8GB or whatever. And yes all those times are approximations. Usually they are 14 mins 30 secs rather than 14 mins for example. It does take one minute longer to open and one minute longer to close when using DVD-R rather than DVD+R.

Only reason I wrote that down was people posting stuff like "I burned at 4X but it took me 30mins..is this normal?"

Weird but I got a 2xDVD+R burning one time instead of 2.4x
