I am capturing a few different t.v. shows that I plan on putting onto a dvd in the future, but for now I would also like to keep them on my pc and watch them from there. My question is if I encode these files to an xvid or divx for now, when I later re-encode them to be put on a dvd, will the quality be worse than if I saved the original large capture file and encoded for the dvd from that? What I really need to know is if I should save the original capture avi in addition to my smaller, encoded files that I make with virtualdub. Thanks in advance for your help.

3 posts on the same topic seems to be enough...
The answer to your question is yes. Each time you encode the quality will go down a little depending on the amount you recompress it. It would have better quality if you kept the original but sometimes that isnt possible. -
nyijedi, please do not post the same question in multiple forums.
I can understand why you were not sure where to post this, but if you find yourself in a similiar situation in the future just pick one forum. If it is considered to be the wrong one, then a mod will move it.
