If you want just want a minus drive get the Pioneer A05/105. It has good media compatibility and is fairly cheap($160-$180).

If you want a daul drive then go with the NEC 1300a, Pioneer A06/106, or Sony DRU510.

NEC 1300a is the cheapest of the daul drives but without a fireware hack
media compatibility is minimal. ($200 internal) ($270 external)

Pioneer A06/106 has the best compatibility of the three. It's a A05/105 with + added to it. ($220-$300 internal)

Sony DRU510 is the overpriced of the three. It has a larger buffer and faster write speed then the others. ($270 internal) ($360 external)

I don't know much about + drives because i've never tried them.

  3. The best dual drive out right now is probably the Pioneer A06. There is a Plextor 8x dual drive that is comming out soon. That will be the best drive out in terms of speed. Unfortually there are no 8x media, but should arrive in the near future.

and the plextor drive don't burn DVD-R at 8X (only 4X) so it's not a real 8X drive

A06 seam the best choice right now..

  5. yeah what they said, the A06 or Sony dru510a are the burners of choice. Hopefully this wont turn into a war.

IMHO i think that both formats are here to stay and whatever you choose will be fine. I seee no benefits to either.

If you do a little research you'll notice that Pioneer and Sony are among the most popular and best DVD-Writers.

I have a Sony and I'm very pleased with it.
Friends of me have a Pioneer and Toshiba, no problems either.

If people have problems with a drive and saying how much it sucks or don't work, it's 99% their computer or their stupidity.
Of course you can have a "bad drive", but that's why there's something like "warranty"

AH your in the same place I am. I want to buy a dvd burner but dont know if I should shell out $60 extra dollars for the a06 rather than the A05. I know I will never make + media but I want the capability anyway. I have read good things about the nec dual format drive. The PROBLEM is is that most everyone in this forum already has a dvd writere and there is few people to do beta testing on the new dvd writers. I have seen some very bad reviews lately of the new sony dvd writer being in a basically recall state so I am gonna stay away from the overpriced sony. Pioneer seems like the most reliable at this state.

Sony getting bad reviews. I've owned every model that they have built. And I own a total of 5. Never a problem. Burn about 9 different media brand. All play and I don't make coasters. But that's only my experience.

  10. WAIT FOR THE PLEXTOR DUAL DRIVE...price should be well
above $500, their cd burners still above $100, while ALL OTHERS
less than $50 now...8x only for + media 4x for - media, but
who cares anyway, should be the best...

I'm refering to the newest sony dvd writer. The previous models didnt seem to have any problems. Do a search for the current sony model number in this forum and you should see what Im talking about.

I have the latest Sony DRU510A x2. No problems and they get worked each day. Sorry to hear others are having problems. Having built my own systems, has helped with eliminating any problems. I guess I'm fortunate. I have a new Pioneer DVRA06 in the box. Building a new DVR/PVR box for the HD TV using a Ice Cube P4i845GE Barbone. Plan to put the Pioneer in it. I guess it always a risk with what you buy. It either works or it don't.

Since you are going to be looking, try these:

    Panasonic:
LF-D321 good used prices but one model old

    LF-D521 (SW-9571?) DVD-R/RW/RAM/CDRW

both are a little slow but offer solid performance

or really slow and no CDRW or DVDRW:

    LF-D311/310 only 1x DVD-R and faster for DVD-RAM
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

Ok, I had a bad Pioneer drive once. It doesn't make Pioneer or that line of drives a bad product. Just the drive *I* had had serious problems.

The new NEC with hacked firmware (to allow more media) seems to be just as good as the Sony and Pioneer +/- drives. Best part? NEC is cheaper.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.
