i was ripping a DVD last night with the DVDx and this morning, i noticed that the DVD was cracked? is it possible that new DVDs will self destruct if detected illegal ripping? just curious..

  2. which part of the dvd is cracked?
coz i have noticed that some of my
dvds have cracks near the hole
on the center. i'm trying to get to the
bottom of this. but i suspect that it's
my dvd player that's doing this and not
    my pc dvd drive.

DVDx is a nice program, BUT... if you rip directly from DVD to VCD/SVCD the disk gets very hot. I tried it once and was amazed. I would suggest using SmartRipper to avoid potential DVD damage.

My DVDs get hot whether they're spinning up and spinning down every few seconds, or running at maximum velocity for two or three hours at a time.

Why do they get so hot? What temperatures a DVD withstand? I've never seen a credible claim that a DVD will last 100 years -- but those claims are all over CDs .. Is CD a more durable format than DVD?

i've read posts in other newsgroups that the heat generated on dual-layered DVDs, from certain standalones, would actually render the second half/layer of the DVD unplayable (or severely pixelated playback) in its heated state. something about the excessive heat causing just enough changes in the dye to affect playback.
