HI there
I've been editing video for about 18 months now and have had an incredible amount of fun. I've had little problem converting home movies and even digital camera pics into fairly decent video CD's - I have done almost 20 by now so I can safely say I am ready to move into advanced stuff.
Last week i started to play with VBR MPEG-1 files (using TMPGEnc 2.5) and managed to create fine looking XVCD's .. also tried to fit a 95 minute film on a 80-min CDR using the KVCD template and that worked fine too. Until now ... I decided I wanted to make a professional job using titles, dissolves and fades etc so I did all the editing on Vegas 4.0 and thought I would customize the VCD template to use VBR. Problem 1 :: when i click on the customize button in the "Render as" dialog box in Vegas, nothing happens. nothing at all ... i can render as AVI and customize all settings. but not for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. something with my MainConcept plugin, I guess.. anyone have a clue what is wrong here ?? or can anyone share their Vegas template for XVCD ?
Then I thought heck I had better luck with TMPGEnc anyway (and I do think the encoding quality is a little better) so i will try frameserving from Vegas to TMPG. downloaded and installed the PluginPac from debugmode.com ... Vegas happily uses that and writes the signpost file, but no matter what I do, TMPGEnc will not open the signpost file. ALways the same errror "cannot open , or unsupported". I've played with all the VFAPI settings, but no luck at all.
What can I do ...??? booo hooo hoooooo

From a frameserving guide here by Baldrick:
Problems
If the frameserve does not work try:
Copy this msvcr70.dll to your WIN/SYSTEM32 folder and restart Virutaldub.
or/and
Install the readavs.dll vfapi plugin, extract all files to a folder and run the install.bat.
or/and
Install the ProxyOn by doubleclicking on the proxyon.reg that you find the virtualdub folder aviproxy.
Note! Remember to click on ProxyOff after you have frameserved done.
or/and
If TMPGenc gives you an error when opening the video.vdr.avi click on Option->Enviromental settings.
And this window appear, click on VFAPI plugin and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and select Higher priority.
Now try to open video.vdr.avi.
Remember to after you have encoded the video.vdr.avi to Lower priority on the Directshow Multimedia File Readear to avoid problem open other videos.
From another by Truman
TMPGEnc. and load the *.avs as video source. If you get the "..can not open or unsupported" message, select options > enviromental (global) settings > VFAPIplugin. Disable direct show multimedia file reader.
Take your pick!
Good luck. -

The is a problem with some versions of Vegas 4 and this just to let you know.

there was only a small issue with vegas 4.0a and 4.0b with audio on 2 pass , fixed now anyway ..
the issue you have with mpeg1 and 2 with vegas is because you prob. didnt register it with sonic foundry which you need to do for mpeg encoding .
also this sometimes happens if you do a upgrade instead of a full install after deleting the complete old directory AND the temp set up files left over from the last installation ..
as for the frame server - never had a problem with it, can you play the avi temp file in media player ? if not you have a registration problem or the installation problem above OR you installed the newest version of the frame server with un-installing an older version ...
for use of the temp avi in tmpgenc , ill give you the vfapi settings that work when i get to the studio later...
