I'm ripping the Farscape DVD's, and DVD2AVI reckons they're in 16:9, when they're definitely in 4:3. anyone know a reason for this? not going to cause me trouble is it?

It never happened to me, that dvd2avi reckoned the wrong aspect ratio. But you don't need to care about. If you are sure, it is 4:3, set 4:3 source in yout encoder settings. DVD2AVI project is only a reference file, and the informations about aspect ratio, frametype etc. are only informations how to setup the encoder.

  3. I got opposit result from you. DVD2avi show 4:3 while the movie is 16:9 and that because it is a 16:9 picture with permanent black bar above and under picture. So when you encode with TMPGenc you need to set to 4:3. This kind of dvd, cannot make to be letter box screen, I believe.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. It doesn't matter, what dvd2avi says or shows. If you have a 16:9 source, you have to resize it to 4:3 to encode it with the right aspect ratio. I assume, you want to watch it on a 4:3 TV. Sure, you must know the aspect ratio of the source (dvd2avi never failed for me). If you use TMPG, set 16:9 as source aspect ratio and 4:3 as video output aspect ratio. Set video arrange method to "full screen(keep aspect ratio)" so that TMPG add top and buttom borders.
Probably this is still not a clear explanation, I hope it helps anyway.
