Hello,
I recently purchased a HS2 but I can't seem to playback any of my DVD-Rs on ANYTHING!! The strange thing is that I can play them back in the unit itself but I've tried many different DVD players that have been known to work without any sucess.
The media I've tried are: Memorex and Optodisc Silvers
Has anybody ever encounter this? I looked around for related forum topics about HS2 but couldn't find any thread about this.
Please help
Thanks

I assume that they are finalized. I'm usually burning DVD-R off of the HD and they playback in the unit itself. When I add a program to the disk recording menu, I pick HDD -> DVD-R direction and add the program. Following the recording. the onscreen displays indictes finished.
thanks -
You need to finalize the disk on the HS2 before it will play on another dvd player...with the disk inserted in the HS2 choose disk options and you will see a finalize selection...It takes a couple of minutes to finalize the disk.

Hey Section8!
I have the same problems with DVD-R disks my HS2 makes as well. I posted the same problem, and here is the reply I got...
"Actually its the way panasonic burns the material to dvd as well. i had quite a number of players where the main poster's problem has occured, yet if i take the same material and burned it in my pc dvd drive (ripped from the panasonic made dvd), it plays fine on all of the players it had a problem with
So do not entirely blame the dvd player, the panasonic uses some kind of method that is not fully compatable with many players--"
There you go. I don't have a DVD burner(...yet), so I haven't been able to test any "re-burned" DVD-R disks. But, I do believe this is more than likely the case. I do have an APEX 5131 that plays the HS2 DVD-R disks fine, but they won't FF or RW properly.

My old Pioneer DV-414 is also does the same thing...it plays fine but trying to rew or ffw it messes up by freezing or skipping chapters.

I've had a problem with DVDRs burned on my E20 playing on an Apex player. After more testing, I found the Apex wouldn't play discs burned in UDF 2.0 mode in Nero, but would play those burned in UDF 1.2. If you use a panny computer DVD-RAM drive, when formatting the E20s, etc disc; it will use UDF 2.0 (this is correct, and is what the E20s, etc; require).
When checking the properties of discs finalized on the E20, they are described as being UDF 2.0.
I'd guess your DVD players won't play UDF 2.0.

I didn't realize that the discs I was burning weren't being finalized. I can't believe that I missed such a fundemental step in the process. For someone who has done technical support for many years I should have read the documention throughly. Boy do I feel stupid. I appricieate everybodys for there input.
Thanks again -
I had a similar experience when I first bought the HS-2.
The explanation in my case was compatibility, not finaization.
This was June 2003. I had a new ($50) Apex 1200 DVD player.
WIth my first DVD-R it respond No-disc.
A friend with a 6 month older 1200 said it played fine in his.
I took the Apex back and exchanged it under warranty.
I also burned a second DVD-R on another brand of blank.
It played in both Apex machines as I remember, but it hung up
during the last 20% of the disc.
I think the two Apex machinces performed the same, but there
may have been a difference. One was actually a 1201, it had a
different (incompatible) remote control.
I actually went out and bought another Panasonic player ($125)
that plays DVD-RAM as well. I'm much happier to have this as a
companion to having the HS-2, and it shares the HS-2 remote.
