NEC 1300A: Why does 4x fail when 2x succeeds?

4X writing is failing in Nero and giving me a "reset occured" error, while 2X writing succeeds.

I'm using proven media -- RITEKG04 and my drive is flashed with Herrie's custom 1f05 firmware.


Help! I'm almost second guessing my decision for the NEC.. I'm thinking I should've gone for the Pioneer A06 or Sony.

I think you answered your own question. Why would you use a hack that was not qualified by the supplier?

There have been no problems reported with the use of Herrie's firmware, and everyone that uses RITEKG04 data is succesful.

Not all RITEKG04 are the same. That's a fact. How can you tell the difference? Well if one pack burns at 2X and the other at 4X then you know they're the same but different. I'll stick with TDK 4X DVD+R and always burn at 4X unlike RITEK.
