  1. I believe the subtitles were .srt, but I will have to check tonite and confirm it.

Actually I am not the first one to have test the LiteOn LVD-2001 with subtitles. A few people have already done it with .SRT on the french forums and it seems like this guy did it too.

Thanks for the response, MMAStriker. Actually, I was more interest in the players ability to play mpg1's burned on DVDs. According to this article https://www.videohelp.com/vcddvdr.htm
VCDs audio often needs to resampled in order for them to play correctly when burned on a DVD discs.

    thanks.

Seems like everyone wants to get 1 of these players, but thats what i don't understand, when there are already Players out there that will do excactly the same as this Player if not better.

The Kiss DP-450 and DV-500 and the Elta-8882 which has progressive scan as well.

Now as i'm living in the UK and as anyone who live's the UK will Know, we will have to pay way over the asking price as we do on all Electrical Goods.

In fact i checked out Ebay.co.uk Autions and found a couple of Lite-on's for sale here's the links....

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3036309133&category=3316

As you can see both being sold by the same seller and both very high in price, now if you check out this link from Ebay Auctions on the Elta-8882....

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3036691602&category=3316

You can see it's much cheaper in the long run and to me it's a better DVD player.

But each to his own as the saying go's

Well, the reason I'm interested in this player and not the KISS, is that in the Netherlands they're both available in online stores, but Kiss will cost me about 325 EURO and the Liteon 220 EURO. And with the liteon I'm also capable of viewing pictures straight from my digital camera's memorycard.
That's why want this one, if it's at least capable of displaying subtitles since I watch almost all my movies with dutch subtitels.

  10. Henk,

After your post I double checked the movie that had subtitles, same here the subtitles were included in the file.

I tested several movies with .srt and .sub subtitles files none of them worked. So I am correcting my mistake here. The LVD-2001 does NOT support the subtitles as of yet.

I apologize for those who were holding their hopes up. Hopefully LiteOn will correct this in their next firmware.

  11. I just got mine today and upgraded to newset firmware and it was very easy . Unfortunately it would not play my DVD-R disk which play fine on my Cyberhome Ch-402 but it is possible I burned them in the wrong mode in Nero for Lite-on to work with . I will get back and report more findings tommorrow or sunday after I have more time with it. The good news is that I burned 2 divx movies using Nero Express as a data disk & the are playing fine One is a movie I got off the net and the other one I made in Dr Divx. To play Divx is 90% of why I bought the Lite-on. The remote is not as cheap as I feared (if you have an apex 600-A you know what cheap is ) .
More later - gotta do some burning .

mmastriker - thanks for the advice on Dr Divx concerning sound props. Were you using version 1.02 or the buggy 1.01 ? Also have you figured out what those a b c d buttons down on the bottom of number pad on remote do ? No mention of it the manual.

    Yeah, maybe subtitles
Can't find any info on their site. It says:Welcome to the Lite-On IT DVD Player & System Support page!
Available here are trouble shootings, product manuals, technical supports and more.
    but the page is empty

  17. I don't use subtitles but if they had fixed it it would probably be in the list. 4 things I have noticed after upgrading to 227.

    1. pressing FF or rewind while watching a divx movie will movie movie ahead or back 1 minute

    2. The search function works somewhat faster

    3. When cycling thru the FF and rewind button and it is on 16x - pressing one more time will go back to normal play instead of freezing

    4. While playing a DVD when you press the display button it now list the total time of the DVD at the bottom of the list you see onscreen

  21. mmastriker your site is down anyone save his site?

One of the most common complaints is the remote sucks. Well I pulled a JP1 file here:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/files/3.%20Device%20Codes/DVD/Liteon_LVD-2001_\MPEG4...DVD_Player.txt
You must register on yahoo to get it, or pm me. This file conatins the info that can be loaded into a device that interfaces with many remotes. Build it from scratch, order a kit, or buy a remote made. More info here:
    http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/index.shtml

Maybe a pda can use infrared to work??

Hi, MMAStriker... Thanks for all your help with this unit. I cannot open the review page you mentioned, so I decided to ask you a question here.

I got mine not long ago from PCclub and happy with it. One problem though. DivX 3.11 encoded movies. After an upgrade to v2.27 it works but on fast moving episodes it stutters . I think you know what I mean. ( Known problem of 10 seconds skipping the video...) In this post you mentioned "a quick conversion to DivX 5.05 or 5.02" Please, help me with that. How it can be done (software and, if possible, guide), and what you mean by "quick". I think, it can be done with Virtualdub but it is NOT quick.

    Thanks Again.

    Waiting for reply.

  24. Well I got 2 today, I had phone ordered and I had done online because they said they fill online first and no big deal as no money was down yet. A friend is getting the second one from me. Reads my Sony Memory Stick fine with the adapter, played a bunch of jpegs and some mpgs burned to a dvd-r just fine, seems to run less hot then most Chinese players.
The drive might have changed as mine loads pretty quietly and appears to have a belt and some gears for the tray, my 163 was all gears, but it seem'd to be fine also.
I'll have to play with it some more and see what all it does, haven't upgraded the firmware yet.
I also just picked up the new Pioneer universal player that does SACD and DVD audio so I think I've got everything covered now. Time to sell of some gear

    HELLO

I am owner of region free players: norcent dp 300, koss dvp 2164 and malata dav 3600

All day I tested my new toy LVD-2001 from pc club
    paid $139 + $18 shipping

So far I can confirm this:

firmware 0227, region free, macrovision off,110-220Volt,progressive scan

    CD-R/RW - all mp3,avi,mpeg 1 and 2 support
    DVD-+R/RW - mp3 disc support
    DVD-+R/RW - avi,mpeg 1 and 2 (ISO DATA) without authoring support
    ---------------> udf/iso 1.02 and iso-rom v.1.05 support (in Nero)
    DVD-+R/RW - vcd,svcd authored discs

    Big advantage:
U CAN put all mpeg 1,2,4(avi) and MP3 files on 1 disc alltogether. No problem for this player. Kiss 450 does not support this.

any questions let me know but what I could see at this time probably best alltogether playing DVD player with capabilities to play wide range of recordable DVD discs.
    Sorry NO DVD-AUDIO support.

  26. Sorry folks, due to some problems with my hosting company who went down for 4 days due to a Denial of Service attack, my website and email were unavailable. Everything is back up now.

Some people took advantage of that downtime to publish without authorization the pictures published on my review on their own forums without even mentionning where they were coming from. I guess they don't know what manners are.

I just got my LiteOn LVD-2001. I'm very pleased so far. I've played
    Region 1 & 2 DVD's, VCD's, SVCD's, Divx and Xvid.

My question is about the firmware upgrades. How can I tell what firmware
my player currently has? I haven't been able to find this info on any
of the LiteOn webpages, manuals, or in the forums.

Also is there any danger at all to flashing the firmware like there is with
flashing DVD-R drives? Is it possible to do the flash wrong and fry the
    player?
    Quote Quote
  28. It's in the last menue item that has the audio output settings, just below them. Mine said 2.23 and now is at 227. The flash process was a bit longer then I'm used too but it had onscreen prompts and a progress display on the front as well.
There is always a slight danger flashing anything but if you read the info files that came with the zipped firmware you should be able to make a working update disk with no problems.
    Quote Quote
  29. Has there been progress on the subtitles?
I'm looking at buying one of these but without subtitle support it is of little use... Im hoping I can connect a HDD to it.
With which formats is there a problem? Or is it across all formats?
I hope you'll pardon me if this info has already been posted, but I am wondering about the progress on it.

  30. Although LiteOn is working on new firmware for supporting subtitle, another Sigma 8500 based DVD player claims to support subtitle right now:
    http://www.nordichardware.com/reviews/Multimedia/2003/Neuston/

Perhaps LiteOn should upgrade their firmware faster in order to prevent market loss.

Further it is very strange that I cannot found LVD-2001 in most HK shopping malls. The only online store is PC Club but they don't ship overseas.
