only 4X DVD-R
and the day we will See DVD+RW at 8X speed, this drive will have a sucessor.. and the price is quite high (as usual with plextor) -
I think that 275 EUR (excl. VAT) for the PX-708A and 349 EUR (excl. VAT) for the PX-708UF is a good price for the first 8x DVDR writer,..,and it's a dual writer.
However, when will we see 8x DVD+R blank media? -

I am not sure how they can release a drive that is advertised as 8X when there is no 8X media available. How did they test to verify the drive can write at 8X? I would be hesitant to buy this drive since I will have to do multiple FW changes down the road to make sure it can support the media. I guess Plextor is loosing their butts to cheaper vendors like Liteon and need to make a market splash to get some new customers. I would avoid this drive.

Theoretical limits and actual usage limits are 2 different things. Marketing tends to always forget about the second half of the equation. That's just the way of things no matter what the industry...so take it with a grain of salt...who knows, it might actually write at 8X flawlessly whenever 8x media comes out.

there are already test samples of 8x media for industry testing and proof of perfomance testing ...

Ritek has announced they will be selling 8x DVD-R later this year but no mention of DVD+R,so 8x DVD+R media will be available at the same time 32x CD-R/W media are released(read:when were collecting social security).

what ive heard is that for max compatability and less burn errors (same holds true for cd's) , burn at low speed ..
but for fast duplication for home use ..... let it rip (no pun meant) because who cares if you have a few bad bits ... -
Good maybe that will drive the price of 4x media down under a dollar.Jim
