Thanks in advance for answering the following question.
Does anyone see anything wrong with this strategy?
I am capturing from vhs-c with an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 Pro in a custom format (MPEG-1, 640x480, 8 m bit/sec). I went with that format figuring that the higher the bit rate and res the better quality the capture (I know vhs-c res stinks anyway, but at lower bit rates I was getting choppy and pixelated video.) My intention is to have a high quality capture that I can convert to VCD or DVD at a later time. Am I missing anything obvious? In other words, am I wasting my time capturing in this format? Or, does anyone see any potential conversion issues. I have a 200GB HD, so space is not an issue. Also, I was having problems capturing directly to MPEG-2 or I would have just done that.
Thanks.

IF you are doing home videos then you may need a TBC ( search for more info ).
Also mpeg-1 was not meant to handle Yx480 since mpeg-1 does not do interlaced materal ( although with that many bits it may not matter ). I think it would be a better stategy to cap to DVD mpeg-2 if retention is your goal.
