Yesterday I d/l'ed tooLame 2h and followed the instructions on how to use it according to flexion.org. The first time it began encoding my system crashed at about 16% of the WAV file. The second time it froze at 26%. The home page doesn't give a complied binary, just the source files ( at least from what I can tell). How would I go about using it or compiling it? I want to try different encoders because the sound after encoding with TMPGENc while good seem to sound kinda "flat" for lack of a better term. flexion recommends using tooLame32.exe but there was no such file in the d/l.

it does include a binary, toolame.exe it is a "command-prompt"-utility. But you can easily use it with tmpgenc

The native compiled win32 binary is here: -

The enclosed toolame.exe is the 32 bit version. It just isn't named toolame32.exe any more.
From my tests, tooLAME does provide better high end than TMPGEncs internal encoder at any given bit rate.
Key points:
Mpeg1 layer 2 audio is not as efficient as layer 3, and so needs a higher bitrate to sound as good. 192 is the lowest you should go, if you want decent audio. Higher is better.
Use as good a source as you can. If it's an audio rip from a DVD, set DVD2AVI's 48 -> 44.1 downsampling to "ultrahigh" quality.
