  1. Ok guys, here's the deal, I have an avi file that I'm trying to convert to SVCD. I have encoded dozens of .avi files without any problems but now everything freezes. I am using TMPGEnc Plus 2.513.53.62 and virtualdub 1.5.4 as usual. First, when loading into virtualdub I get the VBR audio stream detected message. I think, no biggie and strip the audio to wav. When I load the video file into TMPGenc, using the wav as audio, it encodes a black screen. I then increase the Direct show priority and now when I try to load the avi, it freezes. When I lower the Direct show priority the avi loads but encodes a black screen. I figure I have some bad frames so I try to find them and virtualdub crashes. When I try to load the video in AviDefreeze it freeze. So now I'm alone with my avi. Please help!

  2. Have you tried to run the Video Scan in Virtualdub "MP3 Freeze Version"?
(scroll down this page to find it)

Also, have you opened the file in GSPOT?
    (post details)

You have a black screen using TMPGEnc.....
    Are you using 2pass?
    (first pass is blank)

  4. I tried opening the avi in G-Spot and it crashed. I then tried opening the avi in virtualdub mp3 and I got the error "Invalid Avi File: chunk at 10240 extends outside of parent by 133476004 bytes." I don't think I'm using 2 pass in TMPGENC because this never happened before and I didn't tweak any settings. The avi shows up as a black screen when I go to source position. I even tried CCE and it crashed. The avi plays ok on my pc but I want to play it in my stand alone dvd player.

we need to know what kind of avi it is to help

Since Gspot crashes, please download the windows movie player 6.4..
    OOPS..you have it!
Its in the same folder as the useless new WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

so go there and launch it..its called media player2.exe
Now drag your avi to it.
Unlike the newer shitty player which is dumbed down, you can get info here
GO FILE>PROPERTIES>and see if you can get any more information about your file here

  6. I tried to open it in media player 2 and it crashed. The only player that will play it is Divx Player 2.1. Any more suggestions?

Can you put it on the time line in
    ULEAD
    PREMIERE
    VEGAS
    ??
Ift'll play in one of these...you could re render it out to a useable state, or maybe do the work you were planning in another program right there in the NLE editor

I'm having the same problem as goldenchilemonk but mine doesn't crash.
I have an AVI file that I want to make a VCD out of and when I need to split it using "Source Range" in TMPGEnc it just freezes.. now I gather it will cont. working if I just let it sit, but I don't think it need to take so much to move the slider to the middle of the movie and select that as the end (of part 1). So what can I do? I tried going into mplayer2.exe but I don't know what info I can get out of it that you might need?

    P.S.
When I try to open in in VirtualDub I get a window msg saying:
"MPEG Import Filter: packet sync error on packet stream (f813747)"

  11. I'm not sure about Ulead, but whart I did was download NIMO codecs pack and then when I tried to encode the avi in TMPGENC it showed a green blocky screen. Now I am totally confused.

  12. First, I would like to thank everyone for their help. I looked at the file more closely and noticed in the filename it had four little letters-XVID-*slapping myself in the forhead*. Could this be why its freezing everything? I downloaded the XVID codec but when I encoded it using Main concept MPEG encoder it played back as a choppy green blocky screen. So with this new information does anyone have any suggestions?

The results of FFDshow is a choppy blocky screen while encoding in TMPGENC, but now it's not green, I actually see images although very choppy.

Oh yeah, by the way, Main Concept MPEG Encoder is super fast. I don't know about the quality since I can't see anything but it only took 53 mins to encode a 1hr 48 min movie to VCD.

  13. Ok everyone, I figured it out! What I did was convert the XVID to Divx using Vdub. Then I encoded it to VCD using TMPGENC. No audio sync problems and most importantly no green patchy blocky encode. I tried the fourcc trick but it didn't work. If anyone is having trouble encoding XVIDS try converting them to DIVX first using VDUB. I followed the tutorial and didn't lose any quality or have any audio problems.

I can't open it in Vdub cuz I get the error I reported up there ^^^

  15. I have another XVID that crashed Vdub when I tried to encode to Divx. What I did was use the fourcc trick, then when I encoded in Vdub it worked! I suggest you try the fourcc trick before trying to encode an XVID, after that encode to Divx and it should work from there.

    What's the "fourcc trick"?

When I open the file in Vdub I get the error mgs:
"MPEG Import Filter: packet sync error on packet stream (f813747)"

When I open it in DIVFIX it says it is'nt an AVI file.

I tried opening it in TMPGEnc in the MPEG tools under "File" then under "Muliplex" and I get this info on the file:
    MPEG-1 Video 352x288 25fps 1150kbps
    MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps

    Does this mean anything?

It means it's an VCD mpeg1 file in Pal format. Regular Vdub can't open mpegs, you need to get the mpeg-mod version. You should be able to burn this file to disk as is, authored as a VCD of course.

So the AVI ext. is false?

And why is it that I get an error in the middle of the file somewhere? I tried renaming the ext. from AVI to MPG and then opening it in TMPGEnc but it still gets stuck when I move from position 0 to the middle of the file (cuz I want to make two VCDs out of it). The file as it is right now is an AVI file with 714mb.
