  1. Hi,

I have a lot of footage on my PC that I would like to edit to remove scenes that are no use before focussing on creating a video to burn to DVD.

What I need to know before I delete the original AVI file is whether there is significant loss of video quality incurred by letting Studio 8 render the edited file to a separate AVI file.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  2. I've havn't lost any quality, but I capture from my camcorder using my Pinnacle card to a avi and then edit that avi to make another and the footage looks fine.

  3. Excellent news.

I think I'm safe deleting the original AVI file, I just wanted some re-assurance

    Thanks!

If your original is already an avi before editing, then Studio 8 will only render what ever is added to the avi during editing ie. transitions, background music, stills, ect. ect. Studio 8 uses "Smart Rendering" and will render only what needs to be rendered. If your target is to make a DVD, then don't re-render to avi. Go to make disk directly for your DVD. It will automatically render and compile to and burn to DVD.

  5. Thanks for the info, gents.

Redd, I understand your comments, but have one further question.

If all I do is to crop scenes from an AVI file and let Studio save to AVI (in order that I have a smaller file to edit from later) rather than saving to DVD, will "smart rendering" of the file occur?

    Thanks!

  6. If you just crop the scenes, then there will no no rendering at all.
Your final AVI will have exact same quality as the original without the sections that you removed.
That's why it is best to edit video in AVI format.

  8. Better still

Thanks again Gents, your advice is most appreciated!

I can now crop all the rubbish out of the AVI files I have before settling down to edit in earnest.... <gulp>
