Hi,
Here is my problem:
If I take a raw capture file (MPEGII captured with DAZZLE DVC150) and import it into Ulead VS7 then edit out all of the commercials then render the footage as MPEGII (NTSC-DVD). When I watch the playback on my topset DVD player, the quality is washed out and not as clean as the original captured file. If I play the rendered footage back to back with the raw captured MPEGII file, I can see a clear difference. Is there anyway to correct this? It also seems that the rendered footage has a 'film' like apperance to it, sorta like the frames per second have been cut in half or something. Is there a difference when rendering using either 'Field order B' and 'Frame Based'?
The footage is captured at 4200 kbps avg / 6000 kbps max. Then rendered using 'smart render' at 6000 kbps max. at 29.97 fps NTSC-DVD, Frame-Based.
Here is what I've tried:
I've tried capturing at a higher bit rate (8000 kbps max.) then rendering down to 6000 kbps max. but this didn't help. I also tried not editing the footage and just rendering it, the quality is still degraded. Last, I tried using Field Order B instead of Frame-Based, still no success.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
ChachiFace

Remember, smart render only with files you captured with VS. You may want to capture the same video with Video Studio and see if the thing happens. Or instead of using Video Studio, try TMPGEnc to encode instead.
Hello. -
1st of all don't use Ulead to render ANYTHING. Their encoders stink. Personally TMPGenc does everything I need and does it in good hugh quality unlike Ulead.

If the original capture is acceptable, why don't
you just edit out the commmercials with an
mpeg2 editor and avoid the re-encode.
If you intend to put it on a DVD, the capture
needed to be at 720 x 480.
TMPGenc mpeg tools will (crudely) edit Mpeg2.
Much better is Womble MPEG2VCR - BUT
I just captured a 4 hour movie with IVTC turned
on to save 20% bandwidth and edited the commercials
with Mpeg2vcr and the audio got delayed about 1/2 sec
at each cut point. I never have problems if the capture is
29 fps. -
FOO,
I >did< capture at 720x480, that is not my problem. Thanks for your advice.
Tommyknocker,
I didn't know you were only supposed to use smart render with files captured with Ulead VS7. That would be a problem for me though as my DAZZLE DVC150 isn't recognized by VS7. I am capturing an analog signal, not digital. I may try the TMPGEnc.
mmmbeer,
What version of TMPGEnc should I use? I have heard a lot about it but have not used it. I need the ability to edit commercials and preferably have transitions, can TMPGEnc do this? Is there a way to use Ulead to do the editing then use TMPGEnc to Render? I don't need software that will just encode, I need to be able to edit and render cleanly.

The trick with Ulead VideoStudio 7 is to not totally re-encode your mpeg2 file. You do this by going to 1)Share, 2)Create Video File, 3)Same As Project Setting. When you look at the detail window you will see the same parameters as your original capture and Smart Render will work.

ChachiFace is using the Dazzle to capture and then importing into VS 7. He is not using VS 7 for capturing, only editing. Therefore, he should use the method I described to avoid unnecessary re-encoding.

bpjenn,
Your advice has solved my problem! I did exactly as you said and not only was the render time a lot shorter but the quality came out on par to the actual raw captured MPEGII file. I will name my first born after you!
Many thanks,

I know you just couldn't pass that one up.
That's why Joanie Loves "Chagi" was #1 in Korea when it first came out.
