The DVD-R format has been out longer, so most set top players will play them. Less so for the DVD-RW format. Check the DVD PLAYERS section on the left side of this page to see which players play which format.

read about formats: https://www.videohelp.com/dvd
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 90% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
before you buy a standalone dvd player, first make sure it can read DVD-Rs: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
