  1. My DVD player won't do SVCDs, hence I have to do the header trick if I want to do MPEG2s. I'm trying to get 1 movie on one CD to check out the quality. When I multiplex in TMPGEnc, the file size grows to 1.2 gb. I assume this is due to me using VBR. Will this work if I use CBR? Since the bitrate has to be pretty low, is there any point to encoding as an mpeg2, or should I try it as a VCD? Any VCDs with one movie on 1 CD look rather blocky. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Topher,
Basically, the "header trick' just rewrites the file headers to fool the players into thinking that it has a VCD movie vs SVCD movie. File size not withstanding.
One movie per disc (given a normal 90+ minute movie) means a very low bitrate and this brings all of the associated problems, like blockiness. So if this is not a problem the header trick should work just fine.

  3. That's what I'd think, but I'm starting with an Mpeg2 file +/- 775mb in size. When I multiplex it to Mpeg1 (VCD) it baloons to 1.2mb. If I multiplex it as Mpeg1 (VBR), it stays roughly the same size, but it won't play in my DVD player (the video stutters, there's no audio & the video eventually blacks out). VCD Easy also autopads it. Should I try multiplexing it to Mpeg1 (non-standard)?

    Topher,
Aha, good ol' autopadding at it again. Sometimes when I capture a file then try to burn it with VCDEasy (which I think is a fantastic program), it wants to autopad it. Right then is the time to STOP the process. Go no farther. I take the file into TmpGenC and just simply multiplex it again. Do not use the header trick here, just remux the same file. Sounds weird but it does get rid of what ever was in the file that made VCDEasy want to autopad it.
If you like to verify that it indeed worked, load it back into VCDEasy and start the burn process. Notice how the warning goes away. No need to continue at this point. It was just a check.
Now you have a file that can be muxed with the header trick and VCDEasy will not try to autopad it.
For me I jave tried many times to remux (the mpeg2) file using the NON standard mpeg1 option however this NEVER worked for me. I have found that the Standard VCD version only works for me and that works perfectly every time. But I always have to make sure that VCDEasy will not try to autopad my file. Lest it gets way to big.

  5. Yeah, I had tried the non-standard also & it didn't work for me either.
When I try to multiplex the mpeg2, if I set it to mpeg1 (video cd), TMPGEnc creates a file 1.2gb big.
If I set it to mpeg1-system (automatic), or mpeg1-system (VBR), the file size stays about 671mb. When VCD Easy tries burning this, the autopadding creates a file about 672mb, so autopadding isn't a problem, but it won't play in my DVD player.
I'll try some other things & let you know if I succeed.
Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated.

Why, exactly, are you taking a perfectly good SVCD file and turning it into MPG-1?

  7. My DVD player (Panasonic DVD CP67) won't play SVCDs. I'm not really trying to turn it into an MPEG1, I'm just trying to fool my player into thinking it's an MPEG1. I can do this if I break the movie into 2 parts
As for trying to get it to fit 1 movie on 1 CD, I'm trying to see if it's possible while doing the header trick, & what the resulting quality is. It's a hobby afterall.

  8. edsmith77,
What do you mean by remuxing the file? When I re-multiplex the file, it comes up as an mpeg1 video cd. Do I just leave it at that? When I try to burn the resulting file, it still comes up with autopadding.

  9. Might want to also do this in TMPGenc - in TMPGenc go to options, environmental settings, VFAPI plugins, and up the priority on direct show multimedia file reader to 2 not -2. To do this right click on show multimedia file reader and select higher priority until it goes up to 2.

Also check out this guide https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/84759.php to figure out how to put a full movie onto one cd in vcd format. I have created numerous vcd with movie lengths of around 1hr 30 minutes onto one vcd with no problems. Only thing is that to get video quality, you have to lower the audio bitrate.

  10. I have put 90mins of very good pic quality on to 1 CDR (I backed up my copy of not another teen movie)mpeg2 and on a standard tv it was hard to tell between this and the original...I am sure some people would disagree... Depending on the length of the film....anything over 110 mins and I use 2 discs

I have had the same problem with nero on a header trick the file doesn't read properly or show the full file size of 800 mb file just demux the file and re mux the file again in Tmpgenc.
How long could we maintain? I wondered. How long until one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy? What will he think then?

hey did you try MPEG 1 Automatic. oh and if you want to put around 100 minutes on a single cd i suggest KVCD. oh and dont use reselutions higher than vcd. just use 352*240/288. cause if you use svcd reselution, then you will get a lot of blockyness. and with CVD well same. when you use a low bitrate, vcd reselution is the way to go. oh and i dont think CBR is good either. try CQ. but it takes a little bit of time to try to learn how to mess with it.

  12. Anytime I wanna make a VCd header trick I de mux usging Tmpgenc then mux with the setting of mpeg1 VCD non standard ..has worked everytime...except for the few time nero has adjusted the file size and recognises an 800mb file as 800mb rather than 700mb...so I de mux the file that has been tricked and do it again....then hey presto it works
