  1. Hi,

I ordered a Norcent DP 300 dvd player to play VCD/SVCDs. My current player will only play SVCDs with the VCD header trick. But I hope to make "regular" SVCDs in the near future to use on the Norcent.

However, the user forums have several reports of people who have achieved a max bitrate of 8000 kbits/sec for SVCD discs that play on the Norcent DP 300.

I guess my question is two-fold:

    1. Is their a *definitive* spec agreement as to the maximum bitrate for audio+video for SVCDs? 8000 kbits/sec seems way higher than the usual numbers cited. Will an encode of this magnitude be possible?

    2. If one can find a player that can "go beyond" these specs (like the Norcent), is the question not what is the maximum the format allows but what is the maximum the *player* will play? For instance, 8000!!

    Thanks,

    Brian

yes, files can go up that bitrate. but they are called xsvcd. my player plays them perfectly and i use that bitrate for certain movies. svcd specs call for a max of 2600 kb/s. any more is xsvcd. a lot of players cannot play past that bitrate.

  3. 1) keep in mind those SVCD max bitrate specs include both the video and audio...you need to subtract out the bitrate you use for audio (i suggest no lower than 192 kb) from the standard total max SVCD bitrate to get the max video bitrate you can use

    2) wouldn't know why you would want to have a 8mbit SVCD, since that would mean you would get like at most 15 min/disc....unless you got like a 10 disc changer...otherwise, you're gonna be getting up alot

two words (or is it three?): variable bitrate

  5. SVCD specs are designed to be bound by the 2x CD speed limitations (stand-alone SVCD players use a 2x CD drive). As such, a relatively safe bitrate settings to use is for the video bitrate to have a max. of 2500 kbit/s and use standard 224 kbit/s for audio. This gives enough room for overhead and the encoder not quite respecting the set max. bitrate as to not exceed the 2x CD spec.

Of course, most people use DVD players and DVD drives don't have the same technical limitations as a CD player. As such, many DVD drives can play SVCDs at much higher bitrates. What any particular DVD player can play is really depend on the unit itself.

adam has posted in the past a very good detailed post on what the max. bitrate should be. If you search the forums, you MAY find it (though it would be hard to find as adam has posted on many SVCD threads).

    Regards.
