    Hi List,

I put my new Sony DW-U10A in my ADS USB 2 external enclosure. Tried to burn some DVD-Rs as simple back-ups on data.

I used Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum with latest updates (it recognized the Sony drive)

    I tried 2 DVD burns on Ritek DVD-R 4X. I burned the first at 4x -- tried the 2nd at 1x.

    I also tried a burn on an Optodisc DVD-R 2x at 2x.

    I keep getting this error:

Trying a basic back up of data (not even video!) off my hard drive. The total file size being burned was @ 4.2 GB. This was burning from an ATA 100, 7200 rpm hard drive so I doubt drive speed is the problem).

CD Creator says the burn was successful and at first glance it would seem so, but ...

It burns the complete file structure and reports a full burn. But it only really burns about 560 MB (on the Optodisc) to 870 MB (on the Ritek) of data. The other folders have the right structure and even have names of the files that are supposed to be in them, but that's it -- they're invalid files at 0 kb each. WEIRD!

My first thought is that it might be the USB 2 enclosure somehow not being fast enough?? BUT -- I've burned DVD-R in the enclosure in a Pioneer A03 (at 1x and 2x) successfully.

Could it be the Easy CD software? the DW-U10A is an OEM drive -- supposedly Sony's OEM version of the DRU-500A-- I got it with NTI CD Maker software, but didn't install that because I had the CD maker platinum.

Before I pull the Sony and try it internal (vs. the USB 2 set-up) I thought I'd see if anyone has ideas.

    thanks!

Replying to my own post in case it helps others -- it seems it was the software (Ie was using EZ CD Platinum 5 -- guess it wasn't that EZ afterall =).

I tried the NTI CD Maker to burn the same DVD with the same data and it worked fine on the Ritek 4x DVD-R!

FYI, I actually like the NTI software better. It gets some good reviews from varied sources and the upgrade to their full version is cheaper than EZ CD at just $29.99 -- plus a free trial download first to check it and see.
