  1. I just started playing around with my ATI TV capture card. It created a file with an mp2 extension. I assumed this was a "normal" MPEG-2 file, but I haven't been able to open it with any other video editing tools. Nero won't burn it either, although it does seem to recognize it as a video file. Any idea how to open and edit this kind of file? Or convert it to a more standard format?

You can't open it as a video file, because it isn't a video file. mp2 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2.
    Keyword: Audio =)

  3. That's weird. This file was created by ATI's MMC software, and it plays just fine using the ATI file player. Video and all, over an hours worth. I watched it last night. It's about 3.8 GB in size.

  5. It's not an AVI file. If it is an MPEG2, you should be able to play it if you have the ATI MMC software on your computer, since that software provides an MPEG2 codec. What programs are you trying to edit it with? A lot of them won't recognize MPEG2 files. If Nero doesn't like it, you can try the de-mux/re-mux method using bbMPEG (or TMPGEnc if you live in China ).

This is a normal MPEG 2 file. Playing it with Media Player is possible, I do this every day (I have an ATI All In Wonder Radeon). But to do this, you must have a DVD player installed because MPEG 2 CODECS are not standards. Install the ATI DVD Player and the Media Player will magically accept your file...
Another thing to verify is that .mp2 extension is not redirected on a Audio application such as WinAmp. To do this, go to the Media Player "Tools/Options..." menu item, then to the "Formats" tab of the options dialog box. Check that "Movie File (MPEG)" is checked with a white background. This ensure that .mp2 is directed on Media Player and not WinAmp or other. Then you can double-click your ATI files and enjoy...
You will have others problems with MPEG 2. Near all applications DO NOT support MPEG 2 for only one reason: a license is necessary for any kind of MPEG 2 support (******* closed standard!). The solution names DirectShow (TMPGEnc, others...) but for applications that don't support DirectShow, MPEG 2 is a nightmare... Now I think that ATI has not made the good choice with MPEG 2, AVI2 (OpenDML) is much more supported! Fortunately, ATI cards can also save in AVI 2 with a CODEC of choice...

If memory serves, the extension for mpeg-2 is m2p or if demuxed it's m2v for video and m2a for audio. Apparently your ATI file player relys on the header information to play the file and not the extension, but I would guess that your burning software is checking the extension first, and then probably scans the file for compliancy, but since the extension isn't correct, it is not getting that far. Try renaming it to m2p and see what happens.

Thanks. I rarely come across anyone who recognizes it.

I imagine Chofajogaz is on the right track. I just downloaded TMPGEnc today, I'll have to give that a shot. Previously I was using Uleads software, that was what I couldn't get to open it.
