Something that wouldn't cost much, say around $150-250. I just want to burn dvds backups of my movie collection. dvd-r or dvd+r I don't know which to pick since they're almost the same. Help me out here =), thanks.

I use the Sony DRU 500A and have been quite satisfied with it. The dual format is a good feature because it will not become obsolete in the unlikely event one of the formats goes away. I've seen this one advertised for $249 in a few places.

Your question is very subjective, and as such you will get a miriad of different answers from differetn people.
I personally use the NEC1100A.
