  1. I just updated my sony 500a 1.0c to firmware 1.0f, which is supposed to read and write at 4x (or maybe it's 4x read and 2x write). Regardless, it is only reading at 2x. and nero infotool says it is only 2x read and 1x write. I did reboot my computer. any ideas?

the sony will only read dvd video at 2x it will read dvd rom at faster speeds as for burning it will only burn at the speed that is supported by the media you are trying to burn eg: if the dvdr says 1x it will only burn at 1x to burn at 2x or 4x you need 2x or 4x certified media however be aware of 4x ritek media as these only burn at 2x even though your burning software says burning at 4x this is a problem with the sony drive ... hopefully sony will fix it soon with firmware upgrades all other 4x media that i have tried burns at 4x its only the ritek 4x media that has the problem

  4. does memorex have a 4x? they seem to work really well in my 4 year old standalone jvc dvd player. how do i check the disc speed? what is a cheap/reliable 4x dvd-r (how much and where!)? do they have blank dual layer dvd's yet? the guy at compusa said they did but hadn't seem them around in awhile.

cheap 4x media = mirror media 4xdvd-r they work great and play on every standalone ive tried them on and that includes a very fussy player that will not play most dvd-r (so far only the mirror and tdk disks have worked on it) i got mine from a computer fair (in the uk) for £0.85 each ... very cheap for 4x media

As for dual layer dvdr ... they dont exist and even if they did your writer wouldnt be able to write to them as dvd writers only support single layer disks
