TMPGEnc will not encode to anything other than mpg1 or mpg2.
Look for Virtualdub mpeg2 ac3 in the tools section. It convert mpeg2 to avi.

Its only $48. Unless you are not looking directly from Pagasys Inc. Maybe you found a retail box version elsewhere?

BTW, I just went to the web page and see they no longer sell the retail box version and give us a reason to check your spell checker...
The TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 retail box version purchase website is currently closed. Thank you in advance for your comprehension.
err... having trouble comprehending... the closure... of the web page....

mgh, look in TMPGEnc Plus at the file menu in the output to file section. It lets you save as mpg or avi.

dcsos, report this tool in the list, it is a very good one for this task indeed.

    Thanks Baldrick
If .469 doesn't run on your system, version .346 is bullet proof

I use VIDOMI constantly to make VCDS in a two step process.
It makes a DIVX AVI that I've no intenion of saving..
    sort of a digital internegative..
This AVI can be placed on the TIMELINE in VEGAS or PRIEMERE and quickly output as a VCD
(all this beause neither accept MPEG-2 on the timeline directly especially with ac3 attached..)
The trick is the digital internegative 's audio must be a conversion of the ac3 from the DVD to PCM
not the usual MP3 audio that DIVX's have.
this makes the internegative stuttery in playback even on a 1 gig machine..so I discard it after making the VCD
